Four days later, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2022\/12\/iran-public-execution-of-majidreza-rahnavard-exposes-authorities-revenge-killings\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Majidreza Rahnavard<\/a> was executed at dawn on Monday. Could these executions help the regime control the restive society?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Majidreza was executed on Monday morning, surrounded by a group of Basij militants, in the darkest hours and hidden from the public. Following weeks-long calls for \u201cresolve\u201d and \u201ccapital punishment\u201d of \u201cnorm breakers\u201d by MPs and some senior officials, the regime\u2019s Judiciary made sure the cruel undertaking made rounds on state media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The regime\u2019s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, vowed on several occasions that defiant youth, whom he described as \u201crioters,\u201d would be harshly treated. By executing Mohsen, Khamenei opted to send this message to society that demanding freedom comes at a heavy price. But the Iranian people\u2019s reaction to Mohsen and Majid\u2019s execution had Khamenei fall at the first hurdle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Hours after his martyrdom, Iranians gathered at Majid\u2019s grave and vowed to continue their struggle for freedom.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A case study in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>&#39;s criminal judiciary system: The trial and execution of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MajidrezaRahnavard?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MajidrezaRahnavard<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranRevoIution?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranRevoIution<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SvbCgfJkfQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/SvbCgfJkfQ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SCKnv9zi8S\">pic.twitter.com\/SCKnv9zi8S<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; People&#39;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) (@Mojahedineng) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng\/status\/1602664647269634049?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 13, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">From south to eastern Iran and north to west, defiant youths torched the Basij paramilitary bases, seminaries, and regime symbols. In Sattarkhan Street in Tehran, where Mohsen was arrested, people blocked the road and clashed with security forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These protests and operations against the regime continued in the past three days, despite the authorities showing teeth, threatening protesters, and defiant youth. On Friday, protesters in Sistan and Baluchestan province took to the streets and vowed to continue Mohsen\u2019s path for democracy and freedom by chanting, \u201cWe swear on the blood of those killed, we will [resist] to the end!\u201d These protests debunked the regime\u2019s efforts to divide and conquer the nationwide uprising by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-protests\/iran-protests-in-zahedan-outflank-regimes-oppression-and-plots\/\" rel=\"noopener\">branding ethnic minorities<\/a> as <em>separationists<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Furthermore, the state murder of Mohsen and Majid triggered worldwide condemnation. Iranians across the globe, mainly the supporters of the Iranian opposition Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), held protest rallies from early in the morning until the coldest hours of the night, also vowing to \u201cresist to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These executions and society\u2019s reaction have caused a lot of stir in the regime, increasing its infightings. Many mullahs and former officials criticized this execution, questioning the charges of \u201cMoharebeh,\u201d which Mohsen was accused of. Since he hadn\u2019t killed security forces and only blocked the road, he shouldn\u2019t have been executed, some argue. Others asserted that even if a security guard was killed, the state shouldn\u2019t use Moharebeh charges and rather it should have sought \u201cthe path of amnesty\u201d instead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cEven if a protester takes up arms and kills the sacred Imam, he is not a Mohareb, and the state shouldn\u2019t sentence him to death. Despite his crime, we should show mercy and amnesty,\u201d Soroush Mahalati, a state-affiliated cleric, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarpoosh.com\/politics\/domestic-policy\/domestic-policy1401091737.html\">Sarpoosh website<\/a> on December 9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Other officials warned their peers that these executions wouldn\u2019t break the ongoing and relentless wave of dissent across Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIf you care to hold power, note that you can\u2019t fortify your ruling by hangings. If you care to safeguard the system, ask yourself: why are people protesting against us? What have we done that youths are not quitting the streets after three months?\u201d Fazel Meibodi, another seminary teacher, said on December 11, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarpoosh.com\/politics\/domestic-policy\/domestic-policy1401091702.html\">according<\/a> to the state-run Sarpoosh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe cannot freely execute individuals anymore,\u201d the state-run Farhikhtegan daily, affiliated with former Foreign Minister and Supreme Leader Khamenei\u2019s senior advisor, Ali Akbar Velayati.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Execution, torture, rape of uprising detainees will only strengthen <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> ppl will for uprising &amp; change of rgm <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/iranelection?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#iranelection<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maryam Rajavi (@Maryam_Rajavi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Maryam_Rajavi\/status\/7555165144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 9, 2010<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It should be noted that these executions do not show the regime\u2019s strength. In November 2019, Khamenei ordered the slaughter of unarmed protesters. As a result, over 1500 protesters were gunned down in three days, and Tehran arrived to quell the society temporarily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But, following the November 2019 uprising, and after decades of oppression and mismanaging the country\u2019s resources, Khamenei knew that Iran\u2019s volatile society was on the verge of explosion, and inflicting more violence could immediately backfire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So, when the nationwide uprising began on September 22, the clerical regime started its so-called \u201csmart\u201d oppression. \u00a0In its statement on October 25, the Iranian Resistance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-iran-protest\/iran-the-orders-frameworks-outlined-by-irgcs-commander-in-chief-from-the-security-forces-head-quarters-to-the-irgcs-provincial-commanders\/\">revealed a classified report<\/a> of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in this regard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cTargeted arrest of the enemy\u2019s effective elements: Individuals who have been staying on the field during the past 25 days represent act as the engine for the rioters. Therefore, arrest and neutralize them,\u201d the IRGC\u2019s commander, Hossein Salami\u2019s directive to all IRGC commanders, reads, as revealed by the Iranian Resistance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The recent executions are Khamenei\u2019s desperate efforts to postpone his regime\u2019s downfall somehow, as protests have morphed into a democratic revolution. But society\u2019s reaction has disrupted his plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Though the recent executions have been widely condemned by the world community, this vocal support wouldn\u2019t stop Khamenei\u2019s killing spree. He wouldn\u2019t stop his killing machine with nice words, well-versed resolutions, or verbal condemnations. Dictators like him only understand the language of force.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The time has come for the Western democracies to practically support the Iranian people\u2019s revolution by cutting all ties with Tehran, closing its embassies, expelling its agents, and recognizing the Iranian people\u2019s right to self-defense.
