Iran entered 2023, passing a year full of protests and strikes by people from all walks of life. Those protests foretold a nationwide uprising, which ultimately erupted in September 2022 and has continued to this date despite the regime\u2019s suppression.<\/p>\n

Iranians marked the new year in 2022 with social protests stretching across the nation following an almost two years break due to the Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>. The clerical regime\u2019s mishandling of the crisis resulted in over a half million casualties and prevented another uprising from happening following the major Iran protests in November 2019.<\/p>\n

However, following months of scattered protests across the country, finally, in February 2021, Baluchi minorities in Sistan and Baluchestan province rose against systematic<\/a> discrimination. This protest was followed by several other major demonstrations in Isfahan by farmers.<\/p>\n

The first series of protests began in April 2022 by teachers and educators. This nationwide protest was part of the teachers\u2019 movement that began in late 2021 against their poor economic conditions, demanding the release of detained teachers and activists and protesting the regime\u2019s negligence in addressing their problems. \u00a0According<\/a> to the reports tallied by the Iranian opposition, Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), teachers and educators in at least 50 cities held protests on April 21, 2022. Protesters chanted slogans such as: \u201cRelease the imprisoned teachers,\u201d \u201cTeachers, workers, unite,\u201d \u201cGovernment betrays, parliament supports,\u201d \u201cteachers are awake, and they abhor discrimination,\u201d and \u201cThis is the last message, the teachers\u2019 movement is ready to rise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second series of nationwide strikes and protests belonged to the retirees and pensioners of Iran\u2019s Social Security Organization. The retirees and pensioners began their protests in late 2021, demanding their delayed pensions and seeking higher wages, adjusted to the increasing inflation rate and high prices.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, May 15, pensioners, and retirees held nationwide protests<\/a> in front of the local offices of the Social Security Organization. They chanted slogans such as \u201cOnly on streets, we can earn our right.\u201d<\/p>\n
