August 2017\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Pictures_of_some_martyrs_of_1988_massacre_in_Iran.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Pictures_of_some_martyrs_of_1988_massacre_in_Iran-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Pictures_of_some_martyrs_of_1988_massacre_in_Iran-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Pictures_of_some_martyrs_of_1988_massacre_in_Iran-696x391.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\n<p>The international community must publicly condemn the deterioration in the Iranian regime\u2019s human rights record during Iran\u2019s upcoming review session at the United Nations .<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kewzyevVYM\">https:\/\/t.co\/kewzyevVYM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wrlDs8gOZM\">pic.twitter.com\/wrlDs8gOZM<\/a><\/p>\n<p> \u2014 NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1168431980041637888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/books\/24018-iran-where-mass-murderers-rule-the-1988-massacre-of-30-000-political-prisoners-and-the-continuing-atrocities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">Background to Iran\u2019s 1988 massacre<strong><\/a><strong>:<strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">More than 30,000 political prisoners were massacred in Iran in the summer of 1988.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">The massacre was carried out on the basis of a fatwa by the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">The vast majority of the victims were activists of the opposition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PMOI (MEK)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Death Commissions approved all the death sentences.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/25928-khamenei-appoints-ebrahim-raisi-member-of-death-committee-in-massacre-of-political-prisoners-as-head-of-regimes-judiciary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ebrahim Raisi<\/a>, a member of the Death Commissions, is today Iran\u2019s Judiciary Chief.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Alireza Avaei, a member of the Death Commissions, is today Hassan Rouhani\u2019s Justice Minister.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\">The perpetrators of the 1988 massacre have never been brought to justice.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"1\">On August 9, 2016, an audiotape was published for the first time of Khomeini\u2019s former heir acknowledging that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/human-rights-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1988 massacre<\/a> took place and had been ordered at the highest levels.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A new book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/157-human-rights\/26826-crime-against-humanity-new-book-on-iran-regime-s-massacre-of-the-mujahedin-e-khalq-mek-presented-at-european-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crime Against Humanity<\/a>\u201d by the PMOI (MEK), unveiled at the European Parliament last month, lists the names of more than 5,000 MEK members out of 30,000 political prisoners who were executed in Iran during the 1988 massacre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The book also details the findings of 35 commissions looking into the atrocities and lists the locations of three dozen mass graves in Iran.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p>Portraits of some 800 victims of the People&#8217;s Mujahedin of Iran are put on display along the Esplanade des Invalides in Paris to commemorate the executions of thousands of Iranian political prisoners in 1988<\/p>\n<p>?
