As a teenager, he joined the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Basij paramilitary force and participated in the Iran-Iraq war. He rapidly rose through the IRGC ranks due to his ruthlessness and dedication to the regime\u2019s supreme leader. In 1984, he was one of the commanders of the IRGC with the rank of second Brigadier General. Shortly before the war ended, he was transferred to the regime\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-iran-protest\/iran-khamenei-elevates-state-security-force-ssf-command-and-call-for-formation-of-ssfs-intelligence-organization-in-fear-of-an-uprising\/\" rel=\"noopener\">State Security Force (SSF)<\/a>. Some of the positions he held are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">In 1987, he was transferred to the State Security Force as the commander of one of the districts of Tehran.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">In 1988, he was the SSF commander of the Kurdistan SSF District.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">In 2003, Radan was appointed to Mashhad SSF Commander.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">In 2006, Radan became the SSF commander for Khorasan Razavi province, northeast Iran.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">On October 18, 2006, following the retirement of Brig. Gen. Those days, Ahmadreza Radan was Tehran\u2019s police chief,\u201d the state-run <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asriran.com\/fa\/news\/849171\/%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86-%DA%A9%D9%87-%D8%A8%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%AF%D8%AD%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D9%87%D8%A7-%D9%88-%D9%85%D9%88%D9%87%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D9%85%D9%86%D8%AD%D8%B1%D9%81-%D9%BE%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%A8%D8%B1%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%B1%D8%AF-%D9%85%DB%8C-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF-%D8%AA%D8%A7-%D8%AF%DA%A9%D8%AA%D8%B1-%D9%85%D8%B9%DB%8C%D9%86-%DA%A9%D9%87-%DA%A9%D8%A7%D8%B1%DB%8C-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%86%D8%AA%DB%8C%D8%AC%D9%87-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B4%D8%AA\" rel=\"noopener\">Asr-e Iran website<\/a> wrote on July 17, 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe have given a laptop to every morality police unit to keep the data of the ladies who received warnings. Their records will be preserved in the database, and if they again commit their improper actions, they will be arrested,\u201d Asr-e Iran quoted Radan\u2019s interviews back in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In that interview, Radan also threatened to arrest and punish what he called \u201cboys with perverted hairstyles.\u201d \u201cThese boys will be taken to the police stations, their families will be summoned, and after making a pledge to make their sons behave, the families take their children to a barbershop to get a regular haircut,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Radan\u2019s criminal career reached its height in 2009 when he brutally suppressed unarmed protesters during the popular uprising that erupted following the sham presidential elections.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_268730\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-268730\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"ahmadreza-radan-mortazavi\" class=\"size-full wp-image-268730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ahmadreza-radan-mortazavi.webp\" alt=\"ahmadreza-radan-mortazavi\" width=\"408\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ahmadreza-radan-mortazavi.webp 408w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ahmadreza-radan-mortazavi-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ahmadreza-radan-mortazavi-150x85.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-268730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ahmadreza Radan (left) and Saeed Mortazavi (right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Beginning in June 2009, Radan led the crackdown on the protests and the torture of those arrested. Along with Saeed Mortazavi, Radan was directly involved in the torture of prisoners in Kahrizak prison, where several protesters died under torture.\u00a0\u00a0 A radio communication between Radan and his forces, obtained and published by the Iranian Resistance in 2009, further confirms his role in the bloody crackdown on peaceful protesters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cCrush those bastards ruthlessly and proceed to take them all out. Quash them and then take the remaining to Kahrizak prison to give them what they deserve,\u201d he says in part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">He was personally involved in the vicious tortures applied to those arrested during the 2009 uprising and held at the notorious Kahrizak Prison.\u00a0 Radan <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/2010\/09\/29\/executive-order-13553-designating-iranian-officials-responsible-or-compl\" rel=\"noopener\">was placed<\/a> under U.S. sanctions in 2010 for human rights violations. \u00a0He now heads one of the most important parts of the regime\u2019s oppressive apparatus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><strong>What is FARAJA? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tabnak.ir\/fa\/news\/1118846\/%D9%81%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AC%D8%A7-%D8%AC%D8%A7%DB%8C%DA%AF%D8%B2%DB%8C%D9%86-%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%AC%D8%A7-%D8%B4%D8%AF-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%B3%D8%A7%D8%AE%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AC%D8%AF%DB%8C%D8%AF-%DA%86%D9%87-%D8%AA%D8%BA%DB%8C%DB%8C%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA%DB%8C-%D8%B1%D8%AE-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%87-%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA\" rel=\"noopener\">May 2022<\/a>, the Islamic Republic\u2019s Law Enforcement Forces (NAJA) became the\u00a0 Law Enforcement Command (FARAJA in Farsi). \u00a0Mehdi Hajian, Faraja\u2019s then-spokesperson, announced that the entire structure of the organization had changed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Previously, Mohammad Ali Nourinejad, NAJA\u2019s deputy coordinator, announced that in the new structure, FARAJA divided into two sections intelligence organization and public security police.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In other words, FARAJA came under Khamenei and IRGC\u2019s direct command, and the supreme leader tried to consolidate his machine of repression as he sensed another uprising on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><em>Why Khamenei appointed Radan? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Iran\u2019s state media announced that the mandate of Radan\u2019s predecessor, Hossein Ashtari, soon ends. Many observers rejected this excuse, as Khamenei\u2019s decree in appointing Ashtari was not limited to a certain time. So why was Ashtari booted from the SSF?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Radan-4\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-268742 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Radan-4.jpg\" alt=\"Radan-4\" width=\"770\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Radan-4.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Radan-4-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Radan-4-768x477.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Radan-4-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Radan-4-696x432.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The answer lies on the Iranian streets and the growing calls for regime change. The nationwide uprising has persisted for four consecutive months, despite the regime\u2019s brutal crackdown, such as the killing of over 750 protesters, including four executions of the arrested activists. \u00a0Many consider that protests have morphed into a revolution, and the clock is ticking for the ruling theocracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Sailing too close to the wind of downfall, Khamenei resorts to anything and anyone to prolong his regime\u2019s life. Appointing the likes of criminals like Radan is Khamenei\u2019s desperate act to intimidate Iran\u2019s restive society. This method is doomed to fail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In his last months in power, Shah rapidly replaced his ministers, tried curfews and martial laws, and opened fire on protesters, but he couldn\u2019t postpone his regime\u2019s downfall.
