Us Navy Says It Seized Iran Assault Rifles Bound for Yemen<\/h3>\n

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates —\u00a0The U.S. Navy seized over 2,100 assault rifles from a ship in the Gulf of Oman it believes came from Iran and were bound for Yemen\u2019s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, a Navy spokesman said Tuesday. It was the latest capture of weapons allegedly heading to the Arab world\u2019s poorest country.<\/p>\n

The seizure last Friday happened after a team from the USS Chinook, a Cyclone-class coastal patrol boat, boarded a traditional wooden sailing vessel known as a dhow. They discovered the Kalashnikov-style rifles individually wrapped in green tarps aboard the ship, said Cmdr. Timothy Hawkins, a spokesman for the Navy\u2019s Mideast-based 5th Fleet.<\/p>\n

Iran Executions Are \u2018State Sanctioned Killing\u2019 – Un Rights Chief<\/h3>\n

GENEVA, Jan 10 (Reuters) – The U.N. human rights chief said that the death penalty was being weaponised by Iran’s government to strike fear into the population and stamp out dissent, saying the executions amounted to “state sanctioned killing”.<\/p>\n

“The weaponization of criminal procedures to punish people for exercising their basic rights \u2013 such as those participating in or organizing demonstrations – amounts to state sanctioned killing,” U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said, adding the executions violated international human rights law.<\/p>\n

Virginia Man Pleads Guilty to Conspiring to Violate Iranian Sanctions<\/h3>\n

Behrouz Mokhtari, 72, of McLean, Virginia, and Tehran, Iran, a naturalized U.S. citizen, pleaded guilty today to two separate conspiracies to violate sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran regarding the exportation, re-exportation, sale, or supply, directly or indirectly, of any goods, technology, or services to Iran.<\/p>\n

According to his guilty plea, from at least March 2018 until at least September 2020, Mokhtari conspired with his co-defendant and others to evade Iranian sanctions by engaging in business activities on behalf of Iranian entities without first obtaining the required licenses from the U.S. Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).<\/p>\n

Sweden Condemns the Executions in Iran – Summoned the Ambassador<\/h3>\n

The Swedish foreign minister says the European Council discussed a coordinated EU recall of Iranian ambassadors during their meeting on 15 December.<\/p>\n

Sweden acted early by summoning the Iranian ambassador in Stockholm in the intervening days to present Sweden and the EU’s clear condemnation of death sentences and executions linked to the protests, says Tobias Billstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n

Several countries have condemned the executions in Iran and summoned ambassadors to the respective foreign ministries. As recently as last Saturday, two protesters were executed in Iran. Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini were accused of killing a security guard, but human rights groups claim their confessions were coerced.<\/p>\n

EU Summons Iran Ambassador to Voice Outrage at Executions<\/h3>\n

BRUSSELS, Jan 9 (Reuters) – The European Union summoned Iran’s ambassador to the bloc on Monday and told him it was appalled by the executions at the weekend of two Iranians arrested in the course of a violent crackdown on anti-government protesters in the country.<\/p>\n

Stefano Sannino, secretary-general of the European External Action Service (EEAS), reiterated the EU’s outrage to the ambassador, Hossein Dehghani, the EEAS said in a statement.<\/p>\n
