Mccaul Calls For More Significant Action On Iran For Nuclear Program<\/h3>\n

EXCLUSIVE \u2014\u00a0<\/strong>House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman\u00a0Michael McCaul<\/a>\u00a0(R-TX) has called on the Biden administration to take more significant action against\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0for its \u201congoing nuclear provocation.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCaul sent a letter to Secretary of State\u00a0Antony Blinken<\/a>\u00a0on Friday expressing his position that the United States should advance a formal finding of Iran\u2019s non-compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and seek a referral to the United Nations Security Council at next week\u2019s International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe administration must take swift and urgent action to directly address Iran\u2019s ongoing nuclear provocation,\u201d McCaul wrote in the letter, which the\u00a0Washington Examiner<\/em>\u00a0obtained. \u201cThis must go beyond previous censures, including those adopted by the [Board of Governors] in 2022.<\/p>\n

Special UN Human Rights Rapporteur Expresses Concern Over Increased Executions in Iran<\/h3>\n

In a recent report published by the United Nations on March 1, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, expressed deep concerns regarding the escalating rate of executions in the country. Rehman highlighted that in the latest findings, at least 834 individuals were executed in 2023, marking a significant 43% increase compared to the 582 reported executions in 2022.<\/p>\n

Rehman’s report underlined the alarming trend of forced disappearances and hasty, arbitrary executions of both real and perceived political dissidents, including children. He emphasized that events such as these during the years 1981, 1982, and 1988 have not been subject to proper investigation, scrutiny, or accountability by the authorities.<\/p>\n

The report referenced a significant judicial decision made in July 2022, where the Stockholm Regional Court, exercising its universal jurisdiction, convicted Hamid Nouri, a former prison guard, for his involvement in war crimes and murder during the massacre of political prisoners in 1988. Nouri was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the atrocities committed during that period.<\/p>\n
