{"id":319052,"date":"2024-05-04T16:13:48","date_gmt":"2024-05-04T15:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/?p=319052"},"modified":"2024-05-05T08:40:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-05T07:40:38","slug":"irans-autocrats-masquerading-as-champions-of-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/irans-autocrats-masquerading-as-champions-of-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran&#8217;s Autocrats Masquerading as Champions of Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-264584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown.jpg\" alt=\"iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown\" width=\"1000\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown-768x440.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iran-protests-security-forces-crackdown-696x399.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Three-minute read<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This week, a media outlet with close ties to the Iranian regime\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps highlighted commentary from the regime\u2019s so-called human rights monitor regarding campus protests in the United States over the war in Gaza. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1403\/02\/09\/3076095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tasnim News Agency quoted Kazem Gharibabadi<\/a>, secretary general of the Iranian parliament\u2019s High Council for Human Rights, as saying that differing responses to the unrest in the US and Iran are \u201cproof of contradictions and double standards\u201d by the United Nations, whose High Commissioner for Human Rights has issued \u201cthree statements accusing Iran of human rights violations\u201d since nationwide protests broke out there in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The start of those Iranian protests coincided with the funeral for Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who was killed during a visit to Tehran when \u201cmorality police\u201d determined that she was wearing her mandatory hijab too loosely, and violently arrested, leading to her losing consciousness at a reeducation center and dying three days later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following Amini\u2019s death which sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2022-nationwide-uprising\/\">a nationwide uprising<\/a>, Iranian authorities opened fire on crowds of protesters, often using live ammunition, and carried out mass arrests which led to torturous and sometimes fatal interrogations. On the same night, the Iranian people, frustrated from economic constraints, poured into the streets in different cities to voice their outrage at the government\u2019s policies. The popular uprising quickly spread to 160 cities across the country Demands for decrease in gasoline prices turned into slogans calling for regime change. The regime\u2019s forces responded to the peaceful demonstrations by attacking the people and breaking their vehicle windows in the streets. The people in turn attacked banks, gas stations, police stations, governor\u2019s offices, police trailers, vehicles and motorcycles belonging to security forces, bases of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and Basij paramilitary forces, supermarkets linked to the IRGC, offices of Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei\u2019s representatives, setting ablaze anything that was owned by the corrupt regime. \u201cAs an individual on the ground I believe only God saved us,\u201d said Basij commander Brigadier General Salar Abnush, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. Authorities brought helicopters and sprayed bullets from above onto the demonstrators to regain control over the city. On Sunday, November 17, Khamenei associated this uprising to the Iranian opposition People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) and ordered an all-out crackdown. \u201cThese are rioters,\u201d he said, adding \u201cthe country security officials should live up to their duties.\u201d \u201cDo whatever it takes to end it,\u201d Khamenei told top security and government officials, according to a Reuters report. These remarks by Khamenei shed light on his deep concerns about the uprising overthrowing his entire regime. He issued orders for a massive crackdown, allowing his forces to launch a killing spree. As a result, they killed at least 1,500 people with direct fire. Following Khamenei\u2019s orders, security forces began shooting demonstrators in the head and raising the number of casualties to create fear among protesters. In some cities, such as Mahshahr in southwest Iran, the regime\u2019s security forces used armored vehicles, helicopters and large-caliber machine guns against protesters. In Mahshahr, armed security forces chased down local youths and forced them into a marsh area. Then they opened fire with heavy machine guns (.50 caliber\/12.7 mm) on the young men hiding in the marshes, killing many of them. The scope of the regime\u2019s crackdown in November 2019 was without a doubt unprecedented in the regime\u2019s four-decade history. Another issue mentioned by many in reference to this uprising was the PMOI\/MEK\u2019s role in this outburst of nationwide protests. This especially includes the regime\u2019s own officials and state media: The main difference of this uprising with previous years was the organized nature of the developments. Regime officials specially mention this in their remarks, referring to the PMOI\/MEK Resistance Units inside Iran as the leading force behind the country\u2019s uprisings. Resistance Units are teams with a few to several members and their main objective during the past few years has lead the country\u2019s uprisings and counter the atmosphere of fear imposed by the regime. On November 17, 2019, Ali Shamkhani, chair of the regime\u2019s Supreme National Security Council, held a press conference focusing on the nationwide protests. \u201cThese individuals are linked to the PMOI\/MEK\u2026 I believe we have arrested 34 MEK members so far and identified a large network of channels that are active not under the MEK banner but following their modus operandi,\u201d he said. Furthermore, heroic women played an incredibly significant role in the November 2019 uprising, showing practical leadership on the streets, bravery and the remarkable speed necessary that is needed in uprisings. If the word on the ground during the December 2017\/January 2018 uprising was the end of the reformists\/principalists scenario within the regime, in November 2019 Iran the people entered a path of uprising to realize their democratic alternative as the only solution forward. The Resistance Units strategy in cities, towns and neighborhoods has found its ground. The Iranian people and their organized resistance movement have reached a point of no return. They have once again proven to the world that the only means to save the Iranian people is to overthrow the ruling mullahs\u2019 regime. Iranian opposition NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi said at a ceremony commemorating the martyrs of the November 2019 uprising: \u201cThe world has witnessed one of the most horrific crimes of the 21st century. \u201cLet me emphasize that in the face of these arisen youth, the regime cannot forestall its overthrow.&quot; https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/ https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/t\/iran-protests\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, in the wake of two significant United Nations resolutions\u2014namely, the renewal of Javaid Rehman&#8217;s mandate as the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran and the extension of the UN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/hr-bodies\/hrc\/ffm-iran\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fact-Finding Mission&#8217;s<\/a> tenure for another year\u2014the clerical regime has escalated its pace of executions. In the last 13 days, reports indicate at least 74 instances of state-sponsored killings across Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The brutal crackdown coincides with an increased push for enforcement of the so-called \u201cIslamic\u201d dress code in Iran. The head of the regime\u2019s State Security Forces, <a href=\"https:\/\/snn.ir\/fa\/news\/1142581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmadreza Radan stated on April 25<\/a> that 32 separate agencies were involved in that push, which has yielded numerous videos and photographs, shared on social media, of women being harassed in the streets and violently arrested for both deliberate and incidental hijab violations, as part of a campaign called \u201cNoor,\u201d or \u201cLight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The arrests are highly reminiscent of the coordinated crackdown on the 2022 uprising and thus raise concerns about the potential for permanently injurious or even fatal outcomes. Those concerns could be further amplified by a report from the BBC on Tuesday which detailed leaked documents from an IRGC internal inquiry into the widely reported death of one of the protesters of the 2022 uprising. The documents\u2019 legitimacy was reportedly verified by multiple sources over a period of months, and they confirm that 16-year-old Nika Shakarami was indeed killed after being arrested at a protest, as was widely assumed by the activist community and her family.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Watch and judge how this official explains <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tehran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tehran<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HumanRightsViolations?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HumanRightsViolations<\/a> in 20 seconds <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GbNVC9WI6w\">pic.twitter.com\/GbNVC9WI6w<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1747335409598886292?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In support of their cover story, the IRGC suppressed its inquiry into Shakarami\u2019s death, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-68840881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which revealed that<\/a> it had been caused by a three-person team affiliated with a separate paramilitary group sometimes employed for repressive activities by the Revolutionary Guards. Interviews with those involved portrayed the outcome as unintentional, with the three men having beaten her with batons after she fought back against molestation by one of them. Oddly, the individual in question did not even deny the molestation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The report went on to state that an IRGC officer, upon learning that the occupant of the police van was dead, explicitly advised the team to \u201cdump her in the street.\u201d His decision was evidently informed by the fact that the IRGC headquarters was already dealing with the deaths of several other protesters and was by this time concerned with the relevant statistics. This suggests the existence of a broader cover-up and lends credence to the notion that the death toll from the 2022 uprising has been widely underreported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yet, while the clerical regime desperately endeavors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iribnews.ir\/fa\/news\/4222959\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploit events on American campuses<\/a>, it fails to deceive the majority of Iran&#8217;s society, which endures the relentless oppression and brutality of the regime with every passing moment.
