Iran: Council Broadens EU Restrictive Measures In View Of Iran Military Support Of Russia\u2019s War Of Aggression Against Ukraine And Armed Groups In The Middle East And Red Sea Region<\/h3>\n

The Council today decided to broaden the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran\u2019s military support of Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine.\u00a0This framework, adopted in July 2023, currently\u00a0prohibits the export of\u00a0<\/strong>components used in the construction and production of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs<\/strong>) from the EU to Iran, and provides for\u00a0travel restrictions\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0asset freeze measures\u00a0<\/strong>against persons responsible for, supporting or involved in\u00a0Iran\u2019s UAV\u2019s programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In view of Iran\u2019s continuing military support of\u00a0Russia\u2019s war\u00a0<\/strong>of aggression against Ukraine as well as of\u00a0non-state armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region<\/strong>, and following the Iranian drone and missiles attacks against\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/strong>on 13 April 2024, the Council decided that the EU\u2019s ability to impose restrictive measures will now cover not only UAVs, but\u00a0missiles\u00a0<\/strong>too. The EU will now be able to target persons and entities supplying, selling or otherwise being involved in transferring Iran\u2019s missiles and UAVs:<\/p>\n

Targeted Sanctions in Response to Iran\u2019s Destabilising Activities in The Middle East<\/h3>\n

The Australian Government is imposing targeted sanctions on an additional five Iranian individuals and three entities, in response to Iran\u2019s destabilising behaviour.<\/p>\n

Senior officials sanctioned today include Iran\u2019s Defence Minister, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, and the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\u2019 (IRGC) Qods Force, Brigadier General Esmail Qaani. The IRGC is a malignant actor that has long been a threat to international security, and to its own people.<\/p>\n

Those sanctioned also include Iranian senior officials, businesspeople and companies that have contributed to the development of Iran\u2019s missile and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) programs. Iran\u2019s proliferation and provision of these technologies to its proxies has fostered instability across the region for many years.<\/p>\n

The publication of the results of the second round of the sham parliamentary elections of the Iranian regime has caused a stir. The media and regime officials describe it with phrases such as \u201cdisaster,\u201d \u201cscandal,\u201d \u201cshame,\u201d and \u201csounding the alarm bell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amidst this, the outrageous remarks of Ahamad Vahidi, the Minister of Interior Affairs, who had referred to this scandal as a \u201cheroic saga,\u201d have sparked a storm of ridicule. The state-run Ham-Mihan newspaper has sarcastically titled it as the \u201cEight-Percent Heroic Saga!\u201d referring to the 8% voter turnout.<\/p>\n

Former Minister of Communications Mohammad- Javad Azari Jahromi wrote, \u201cPresumably, their notion of heroism refers to the 92 percent non-participation in Tehran.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, May 12, two members of the same family, Farangis Fat\u2019hi and Akram Koukhian, were arrested by security forces at their home in Malekan County, northwestern Iran.<\/p>\n

An informed source close to the family reported that at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, Farangis Fat\u2019hi and her daughter, Akram Koukhian, were violently arrested by a large number of security agents in their home located in Valiasr township,\u00a0Malekan County<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The security agents broke the windows of their home during the search and seized personal belongings, including mobile phones, computer cases, and a family member\u2019s car.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Parliamentary Elections: A Saga of Apathy as Less Than 8% Participate<\/h3>\n

The participation of less than eight percent of Iranian citizens over the age of 18 in the second stage of the regime\u2019s parliamentary elections in major cities like Tehran, Karaj, Shiraz, and Mashhad, coupled with reports that half of the votes cast in these cities were invalid, has once again highlighted the regime\u2019s legitimacy crisis. This crisis has raised concerns even among the regime\u2019s state-run media. In recent months, Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the regime, has repeatedly called for maximum participation in the\u00a0elections<\/a>, stating things like \u201cWhoever accepts the Islamic Republic should come to the polls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, analysts of the regime have interpreted the refusal of more than 92 percent of Iranians to participate as a severe blow to the regime\u2019s social base, even among the population and employees of government institutions.<\/p>\n

This contract was secretly concluded, to the extent that even some members of the city council learned of its contents only after it was published in the media. It reached a point where the head of the council\u2019s legal committee remarked, \u201cWe are facing a mayor and a municipality that avoids scrutiny; we don\u2019t even have access to the text of the multi-billion-dollar deal with the Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n
