The Financial Times reported<\/a> on June 3 that whistleblowers have alleged the discovery of billions of dollars in previously undetected transactions by Standard Chartered with Iran-linked entities, including sanctioned companies and terrorist organizations. These transactions were uncovered after the whistleblowers re-examined spreadsheets and documents initially provided to US authorities in 2012 and 2013, revealing hidden data. The whistleblowers are seeking to revive a lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court in 2012 and overturn the dismissal of their claim.<\/p>\n

The newly found data has prompted the whistleblowers, including a former StanChart executive, to accuse the US government of committing a \u201ccolossal fraud on the court\u201d by asserting they failed to provide substantial evidence for enforcement actions against the bank. In response, StanChart dismissed the filing as another attempt to use fabricated claims and expressed confidence that the courts would reject these claims as they have in the past.<\/p>\n

With the help of a forensic investigator, the whistleblowers discovered hidden data covering over half a million financial transactions, including $9.6 billion in transactions with sanctioned entities related to Iran and $100 billion in forex transactions tied to the clerical regime. The transactions allegedly occurred between 2008 and 2013, despite StanChart\u2019s 2007 announcement to cease new business with Iranian customers.<\/p>\n
