On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Iranian political prisoners marked the 29th consecutive week of their \u201cNo to Executions Tuesdays<\/a>\u201d hunger strike, a campaign launched in February 2024 to protest the regime\u2019s rampant use of the death penalty. In a powerful statement released to coincide with the latest round of strikes, the prisoners condemned the recent surge in executions, which they described as the regime’s attempt to exploit global distractions, such as the Paris Olympics, to carry out state-sanctioned killings in silence.<\/p>\n The statement from the campaign revealed that, since the previous Tuesday, over 45 prisoners had been executed, including 29 in a single day and 26 in a mass execution at Ghezel Hesar Prison. This grim milestone, the prisoners noted, set a new “record of state-sanctioned killings” not seen in recent years. The statement also highlighted the regime\u2019s continued use of vague and politically motivated charges, such as “rebellion” and “corruption on earth,” to justify the death sentences of many political prisoners.
