At the recent Iranian Resistance conference<\/a>, Gilles Paruelle, a lawyer with experience at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and former president of the Val d\u2019Oise Province Bar Association, emphasized the urgent need for accountability and justice for crimes committed by the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n Paruelle, reflecting on his work in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide, highlighted the significance of international justice in holding perpetrators accountable for atrocities. He noted that while the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda played a key role in prosecuting those responsible for the genocide, political and legal barriers often hindered justice. He drew parallels between the Rwandan experience<\/a> and the situation in Iran, stressing the importance of universal jurisdiction as a means to prosecute those who commit crimes against humanity, regardless of where they are found.<\/p>\n Focusing on Iran, Paruelle voiced his support for the Iranian opposition and their struggle against impunity. He advocated for an international tribunal to address the crimes committed by the Iranian regime, acknowledging the challenges due to geopolitical dynamics and the veto powers at the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n Paruelle concluded by emphasizing the need for a political change in Iran to enable the prosecution of those responsible for human rights violations, calling for an end to the long-standing culture of impunity.<\/p>\n A translated version of <\/strong>Gilles Paruelle\u2019s speech follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Yes, thank you, Madam President, for giving me the floor, and for the opportunity to send a greeting to my friends in Ashraf, whom I particularly salute, especially those in section 6, which I visited several times when I was in Ashraf.<\/p>\n These are people who are very close to my heart, and when we heard from the survivors of 1988 earlier, I couldn\u2019t help but think of all those young men I listened to about twenty years ago, who confided in me with the same stories. I must tell you that it left a significant mark on me, perhaps even influencing the course of my professional work.<\/p>\n Thank you, Madam President, for giving me the floor. For a moment, I wondered, until Professor Boul\u2019s intervention, why I was speaking among such distinguished personalities. I haven\u2019t written any books, nor have I been a special rapporteur, and I acknowledge the work of Professor Rayman, whom I\u2019ve read, although I didn\u2019t have the opportunity to listen to him earlier for personal reasons as I had to step out.<\/p>\n I haven\u2019t done any of those things, and I thought perhaps I was here because I\u2019m the only one who speaks French. But then Mr. Cl\u00e9ment Voul spoke, and I realized that wasn\u2019t the reason either.<\/p>\n So, I wondered what I could say, and perhaps it is my humble experience as a practitioner, a lawyer for thirty years, working with the Rwandan people in the aftermath of the Tutsi genocide.<\/p>\n The Tutsi genocide is something that has left a deep impact.
