New Zealand Imposes New Sanctions Against Russia and Iran<\/h3>\r\n

New Zealand has adopted another package of sanctions against Russia, accusing it of breaching the Chemical Weapons Convention, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said. He stated that Russian military personnel have unlawfully used tear gas in Ukraine. Peters also mentioned that New Zealand authorities have \u201creceived reports\u201d throughout the year regarding the use of chemical weapons by Russian forces. Additionally, the statement notes that alongside the anti-Russian sanctions, New Zealand is imposing restrictions on Iranian citizens who, according to Wellington, are involved in \u201csupplying ballistic missiles and drones to Russia.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

The document issued by the country\u2019s government states that Wellington \u201cwill join those partners who have imposed sanctions against Russia\u2019s \u2018shadow fleet.’\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Former Soldier Daniel Khalife Found Guilty of Spying for Iran<\/h3>\r\n

A former soldier whose prison escape sparked a huge manhunt in 2023 has been convicted of spying for Iran but cleared of carrying out a bomb hoax. Daniel Khalife was found guilty of two counts relating to his espionage on Thursday. The 23-year-old had admitted partway through his trial to the escape from HMP Wandsworth, in south-west London. Khalife had strapped himself to the underside of a food delivery van while being held on remand on the spying charges.<\/p>\r\n

Prosecutors accused Khalife of playing \u201ca cynical game\u201d in claiming he wanted a career working as a double agent to help British security services. In fact, he gathered \u201ca very large body of restricted and classified material\u201d, they said.<\/p>\r\n

This international organization deemed the trial of Varisha Moradi \u201cunfair\u201d and, citing violations of her rights during detention, urged Iranian authorities to immediately halt the death sentence, annul her conviction, and release her without delay.<\/p>\r\n

In its statement, Amnesty International also called on the Iranian regime to impartially investigate the allegations of torture and mistreatment of this political activist, prosecute those responsible in fair trials, and ensure her access to adequate medical care as well as visits with her family and lawyers.<\/p>\r\n

Iran HRM has obtained an open letter from three prisoners sentenced to amputation\u2014Mehdi Shahivand, Mehdi Sharifian, and Hadi Rostami\u2014who publicly urge human rights organizations to take immediate action to prevent their sentences from being carried out. They warn of the imminent threat posed by this inhumane punishment.\u00a0This comes after the amputation sentence for two brothers imprisoned in Urmia Central Prison was recently carried out. In July 2023, four prisoners were threatened with imminent amputation by Naser Atabati, the Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan Province, during a prison inspection. Accompanied by Mojidi, the Prosecutor of Urmia, Atabati informed the prisoners that their sentences would soon be enforced. These individuals, identified as victims of dire economic conditions caused by systemic corruption, include Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Shahivand, Mehdi Sharifian, and Kasra Karami.<\/p>\r\n
