While Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei attempted to project confidence in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/khamenei-digs-in-as-assads-fall-rattles-tehran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his December 11 speech<\/a>, his repeated warnings against dissent and threats to media outlets revealed a regime increasingly insecure about its stability. The developments in Syria have not only disrupted his regional ambitions but have also triggered panic in Tehran over potential domestic repercussions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etemadonline.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%B3%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B3%DB%8C-9\/689414-%D8%AF%DB%8C%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%84%DB%8C-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%AF%D8%B4%D9%85%D9%86-%D9%81%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%B2%DB%8C-%D9%85%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%B8%D8%B1%DB%8C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohammad Jafar Montazeri<\/a>, the regime\u2019s Chief Justice, sought to dismiss comparisons between Iran and Syria but revealed underlying anxieties. \u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran is not comparable to the Syrian government. However, we must not underestimate the enemy, as their malice can engulf all the countries of the region,\u201d he said. His subsequent threat against dissenters betrayed the regime\u2019s unease: \u201cThose who fan the flames of the enemy\u2019s propaganda in cyberspace will be dealt with severely.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This fear has manifested in a crackdown on domestic voices. The Judiciary has summoned insiders, including former parliamentarians Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh and Bahram Parsaei, state-affiliated journalist Marzieh Mahmoudi, and political analysts such as Ali Khosrowani, Sadegh Zibakalam, Mohammad Mohajeri, Fayyaz Zahed, and Ali Abdi, along with several Telegram channel operators. They stand accused of \u201cspreading false information\u201d and \u201cdisrupting public morale.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabnak.ir\/fa\/news\/1277359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tabnak<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Tehran prosecutor\u2019s office has opened cases against these individuals, a move widely seen as a desperate attempt to suppress criticism of the regime\u2019s foreign policy following Assad\u2019s fall.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Khamenei Digs in As <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Assad?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Assad<\/a>\u2019s Fall Rattles <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tehran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tehran<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LW9OIi50Kp\">https:\/\/t.co\/LW9OIi50Kp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1866900253229924535?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Khamenei himself acknowledged the regime\u2019s vulnerability, declaring, \u201cSome act against us with foreign Persian-language media, and they must be confronted differently, but no one inside the country should do such a thing.\u201d Head of the Judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei further emphasized the need for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etemadonline.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%A7%D8%AC%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B9%DB%8C-23\/689478-%D9%81%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%B2%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%A7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continuous monitoring<\/a>\u201d of social media, ordering security forces to counter what he called \u201cpsychological operations\u201d designed to undermine public trust in the regime.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Religious leaders also betrayed their unease in public statements. Ahmad Alamolhoda, Khamenei\u2019s representative in Mashhad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irna.ir\/news\/85688611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted to \u201canxiety-inducing\u201d<\/a> events in Syria and condemned those spreading despair. \u201cSome sick-hearted individuals are trying to spread hopelessness regarding the power of the resistance,\u201d he said, dismissing fears that a similar fate would await the clerical regime in Iran.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, Allahnoor Karimi-Tabar, Friday prayer leader in Ilam, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shabestan.news\/news\/1794619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered a more candid<\/a> reflection of the regime\u2019s fears. He criticized Assad\u2019s decision to distance himself from Iran, stating, \u201cIf Bashar al-Assad hadn\u2019t turned his back on the Islamic Republic and fallen for America\u2019s false promises, this calamity wouldn\u2019t have befallen the oppressed people of Syria.\u201d He warned Iranian officials against complacency, adding, \u201cThe ultimate target of these schemes is the Islamic Republic. If we lose time, regret will be futile.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khabaronline.ir\/news\/1995901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghalibaf admitted<\/a> to the fallout, describing Assad\u2019s collapse as causing \u201cdisruption in the logistical network of Iran&#8217;s regional forces.\u201d While claiming that Hezbollah could adapt to the new conditions, Ghalibaf acknowledged that Syria\u2019s failure to heed Iran\u2019s warnings had resulted in \u201cinternal chaos.\u201d He warned that Iran would face \u201csignificant challenges\u201d if it failed to act decisively in the rapidly shifting regional landscape.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, IRGC Commander Hossein Salami downplayed the strategic loss but revealed a defensive posture. \u201cSome in political and intellectual circles are spreading the idea that Iran has lost its regional influence, but if we were weak, we wouldn\u2019t be conducting operations like <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">True Promise,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khabaronline.ir\/news\/1995875\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he argued<\/a>. They cannot ignore that in Syria, a smaller but disciplined, well-trained, and cohesive rebel force defeated a much larger, better-equipped, and professionally trained Syrian army.
