On the anniversary of the 2017<\/a> and 2009 nationwide protests<\/a>, top Iranian officials delivered a series of warnings reflecting a regime increasingly anxious about its stability. Senior clerics and politicians sounded alarms over domestic dissent and foreign influence, painting a picture of a state under siege by internal fragility and external pressures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mehdi Shabzendehdar,<\/a> a member of the Qom Seminary, warned, \u201cIt is possible that, due to the negligence of officials and some people, we may face circumstances like those witnessed in Syria.\u201d He accused foreign enemies of working covertly to influence public sentiment, stating, \u201cSometimes the enemy\u2019s plans quietly and gradually affect the beliefs and emotions of the people.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly, Mohsen Araki<\/a> of the Expediency Council referred to the 2022 protests as a \u201cseditious rebellion\u201d and demanded that officials openly describe them as such. \u201cTell the people, tell the media, tell the officials: this was a seditious rebellion,\u201d he insisted. He went on to link the unrest to the deaths of security forces, saying, \u201cWe sacrificed martyrs like dear Arman and Rouhollah Ajamian to combat this sedition.\u201d Araki also emphasized the dangers of an unregulated internet, claiming, \u201cIf cyberspace is left unchecked, it will be a path for the enemy to attack our nation\u2019s independence and interests.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
