A severe diplomatic and economic clash between Iran and Turkey has left hundreds of Iranian truck drivers stranded at border crossings, exacerbating tensions and revealing the clerical regime\u2019s failure to manage the crisis effectively. The dispute centers around Turkey’s recent imposition of a 155% fuel tax on Iranian trucks entering the country, a move Turkey claims is a retaliatory measure against Iran’s own discriminatory fuel pricing policies.<\/p>\n

On December 29, 2024, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan signed into law a policy requiring Iranian trucks entering Turkey to pay a tax equivalent to 155% of the value<\/a> of the fuel in their tanks. The tax rate, calculated based on Turkey’s fuel prices, has left Iranian truck drivers burdened with exorbitant costs. According to state media<\/a>, drivers now face additional expenses of up to 260 million tomans per trip, given the current free market exchange rate of approximately 80,000 tomans per U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n

The situation began to escalate when Iran implemented a \u201cfull-tank tax\u201d policy<\/a> on Turkish trucks at its borders, forcing Turkish drivers to pay for their fuel based on the tank’s full capacity, regardless of actual consumption. In response, Turkey mirrored the policy, targeting Iranian vehicles and sparking a full-blown border standoff.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate that hundreds of Iranian trucks have been parked at border crossings like Bazargan and Poldasht, awaiting a resolution. Drivers, unable to afford the inflated taxes, have abandoned their trucks at the borders and returned home. One driver lamented, “We are left stranded without any viable solution. These policies are draining our resources and making our jobs unsustainable.”<\/p>\n
