Here we go again! Michael Rubin\u2019s obsessive tirades against the Mujahedin-e Khalq (PMOI\/MEK<\/a>), Iran\u2019s leading democratic opposition movement, and its parent organization, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI<\/a>), have become so frequent they could almost justify a LinkedIn endorsement under \u201cPropaganda Expertise\u201d or \u201cFreelance Spin for Tehran.\u201d His most recent effort\u2014a graceless tirade targeting an\u00a0international conference<\/a>\u00a0on Iran attended by three U.S. Generals and several former European Prime Ministers and ministers in January\u2014resembles the rantings of a disgruntled propagandist more than a legitimate critique.<\/p>\n

Rubin\u2019s screed is a cocktail of projection and recycled falsehoods. With all the zeal of a self-declared arbiter of Iranian opposition legitimacy, he regurgitates narratives so hyperbolic they could embarrass even Tehran\u2019s modern-day Nazi Gestapo, the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).<\/p>\n

Rubin\u2019s fixation on the MEK is best understood through the lens of his own\u00a0dubious history<\/a>. This is a man whose r\u00e9sum\u00e9 could double as a guidebook to the dark arts of propaganda. In 2014, Rubin was linked to a\u00a0UAE-funded PR operation<\/a>\u00a0so brazen that\u00a0Amnesty International<\/a>\u00a0questioned whether his anti-dissident articles were paid placements. In the 1990s, Rubin cozied up to Iranian officials, earning access to\u00a0IRGC archives<\/a>\u00a0and giving lectures at regime-aligned institutions, privileges that no self-respecting \u201chawk\u201d would ever boast about. Most damning, however, is Rubin\u2019s association with\u00a0Ahmad Chalabi<\/a>, the Iranian intelligence asset who played a key role in misleading the U.S. into the\u00a0Iraq War<\/a>. During his Pentagon tenure, Rubin worked in an\u00a0office<\/a>\u00a0accused of manufacturing \u201cpropaganda<\/a>\u201d to sell the war, a skillset he seems to have repurposed in his vendetta against the MEK.<\/p>\n
