Their only crime: demanding freedom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a powerful op-ed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unita.it\/2025\/02\/03\/forca-iran-behrouz-ehsani-medhi-hassani-regime-misogino-teocratico-mullah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published by <em>Unita.it<\/em><\/a>, human rights activist and former Italian MP Elisabetta Zamparutti sheds light on their case, calling for international intervention to stop the executions. With a long history of advocacy against the death penalty, Zamparutti echoes the voices of many who see this as yet another brutal crackdown on dissent in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/8975\/2025\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ehsani and Hassani<\/a> were arrested in September 2022, amid nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. Their death sentences were handed down two years later, on September 16, 2024\u2014symbolically on the anniversary of the protests. On January 7, 2025, Iran\u2019s Supreme Court confirmed their sentences.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Daughter\u2019s Pain, a Family\u2019s Anguish<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Zamparutti recounts the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/33040107\/iran-execution-mehdi-hassani-behrouz-ehsani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emotional testimony of Maryam Hassani<\/a>, Medhi\u2019s 24-year-old daughter, who now lives in Turkey with her mother. She describes the brutal arrest of her father in Zanjan and his six months of total isolation in Tehran\u2019s Evin Prison. The family was kept in the dark, with no contact or legal representation of their choice. The last time she heard his voice was two weeks ago, in a short five-minute phone call. Even then, he spoke of freedom, not fear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHe told us not to worry about him,\u201d she says, \u201cbut to focus on the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Days later, he was moved to Ghezel Hesar and placed back in isolation. Only the intervention of other political prisoners ensured that his family was informed of his whereabouts. His wife was finally allowed a short 20-minute visit, where she found him with his long hair forcibly cut.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I Won\u2019t Repent for Fighting for Freedom&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the pressure, Medhi Hassani refused to break. Authorities offered him a deal\u2014cooperation in exchange for his life. His answer was clear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;I won\u2019t repent for fighting for freedom.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This refusal, Zamparutti argues, is the real reason for his death sentence. Both he and Ehsani are part of the Iranian resistance movement led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/maryam-rajavi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, which calls for a free and democratic Iran. Over 300 human rights activists and experts have signed an appeal to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, urging him to intervene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cKnowing that lovers of freedom exist today but may not be here tomorrow,\u201d Zamparutti writes, \u201ccompels me to stand with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With mounting international pressure, the world watches as Iran inches closer to another act of state violence.
