This comes despite U.S. sanctions and the reported $11 billion debt Iraq owes to Iran for previous energy imports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saeed Tavakoli, CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, stated that Iran has &#8220;recently extended a favorable long-term contract for gas exports to Iraq,&#8221; dismissing concerns about the impact of U.S. sanctions on these transactions. &#8220;With regard to the recent decision by the United States to revoke Iraq\u2019s waiver for importing Iranian gas, it is likely that this applies to a different type of gas transaction,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asriran.com\/fa\/news\/1036122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he told state media<\/a> on February 7, 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, millions of Iranian citizens continue to suffer from gas shortages, power outages, and extreme cold. Tavakoli attempted to reassure the public, claiming that &#8220;currently, 72% of gas production is consumed domestically, and with the cooperation of our fellow citizens, the gas network will remain stable in the coming days.&#8221;\u00a0However, this statement contradicts the reality faced by Iranian households, many of which have been left without heating due to <a href=\"https:\/\/iranfocus.com\/economy\/52523-widespread-power-outages-begin-in-several-iranian-provinces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repeated blackouts<\/a> and gas supply disruptions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>, despite holding the world\u2019s second-largest natural gas reserves, finds itself in the paradoxical position of needing to import <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/gas?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#gas<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SFWBhQ9mC0\">https:\/\/t.co\/SFWBhQ9mC0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1714523704904876392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 18, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The situation has been exacerbated by the Iranian government&#8217;s continued energy agreements with Iraq, despite Baghdad\u2019s failure to settle its multi-billion-dollar debt. Iraqi officials have previously stated that payments have been deposited in an official account at the Trade Bank of Iraq but remain blocked due to international sanctions and financial restrictions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. President Donald Trump issued a MEMO\u00a0on February 5, 2025, revoking Iraq\u2019s exemption from sanctions, effectively cutting off Baghdad\u2019s ability to legally import Iranian gas. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/trump-ends-iraqs-exemption-crucial-iranian-gas-imports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New Arab<\/em> reported<\/a> that &#8220;Iraq is unable to secure alternative supplies for the 50\u201355 million cubic meters of gas it receives daily from Iran,&#8221; raising concerns about a looming electricity crisis.
