Haqshenas revealed that the wetland, once 10 meters deep, has now shrunk to less than 50 centimeters, with some areas completely dried up.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">An Ecological Disaster<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharghdaily.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B2%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%85%D9%87-100\/977940-%D9%88%D8%B6%D8%B9%DB%8C%D8%AA-%D9%88%DB%8C%DA%98%D9%87-%DA%AF%DB%8C%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state-run daily <em>Shargh<\/em><\/a>, Haqshenas detailed the drastic reduction in Anzali Wetland\u2019s depth, which has shrunk from 10 meters before the 1979 revolution to less than 50 centimeters today, with some areas having completely dried up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe accumulation of industrial waste and sewage has left the Anzali Wetland gasping for breath,\u201d Haqshenas stated, highlighting the severity of the environmental crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further warned that the contaminated runoff from the Goharrud and Zarjoub rivers is pushing the wetland toward ecological collapse, as residents in the surrounding region are now inhaling a dangerous mix of bacteria, viruses, and heavy metal particles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Haqshenas estimated that Iran would need approximately 20 trillion tomans ($400 million) to construct essential wastewater treatment plants in major cities, but he admitted that the government does not have the funds to allocate for such projects. Environmental experts have long warned about the dire consequences of Iran\u2019s wetland depletion, but state inaction has only worsened the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Haqshenas noted that one billion cubic meters of wastewater have already accumulated in the Anzali Wetland\u2019s lower layers, turning it into a toxic swamp. Even if all of Iran\u2019s dredging equipment were deployed in Gilan, he said, only 30 million cubic meters could be removed, underscoring the enormity of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adding to these concerns, Haqshenas warned that shallow groundwater sources in Gilan province are increasingly exposed to contamination. On January 30,\u00a0Mohammad-Ali Vishkai, Gilan\u2019s head of crisis management, warned that rainfall levels in the province had reached historic lows, exacerbating the drying of Anzali Wetland. He also noted that dust storms\u2014previously limited to southern Iran\u2014are now affecting Gilan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, the Caspian Sea, which supplies part of Anzali Wetland\u2019s water, has been rapidly receding, worsening the situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In March 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mehrnews.com\/news\/6050954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese ambassador to Iran<\/a> announced Tokyo\u2019s willingness to help restore Lake Urmia, Anzali Wetland, and other water bodies in Iran. However, despite this international offer, no meaningful progress has been made. The Iranian regime\u2019s failure to accept foreign aid for environmental restoration has fueled criticism from activists and experts alike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Haqshenas reiterated that unchecked urbanization, industrial expansion, and government mismanagement have all contributed to Anzali Wetland\u2019s collapse. In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharghdaily.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%B9%D9%87-220\/957394-%D8%AA%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B2%D9%84%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%B7%D8%AD-%D8%B4%D8%AF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he warned<\/a> that sewage from major cities\u2014including Rasht, Anzali, Someh Sara, Masal, Fuman, Shaft, and other rural areas\u2014was flowing directly into the wetland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAnzali Wetland, which once had a depth of over 10 meters, is now down to just 20 centimeters in some areas.
