U.S. Will Collapse Iran\u2019s Economy by Shutting Down Its Oil Industry, Treasury Secretary Says<\/h3>\n

President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s sanctions against Iran are designed to shut down the country\u2019s oil industry and \u201ccollapse its already buckling economy,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday.<\/p>\n

The U.S. is deploying sanctions against Iran aggressively for \u201cimmediate maximum impact,\u201d Bessent told the Economic Club of New York. Trump\u2019s goal is to slash Iran\u2019s oil exports of 1.5 million barrels per day to a trickle, the Treasury secretary said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to shut down Iran\u2019s oil sector and drone manufacturing capabilities,\u201d Bessent said. The administration also intends to cut off Tehran\u2019s access to the international financial system, he said.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON, March 6 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s administration is considering a plan to stop and inspect Iranian oil tankers at sea under an international accord aimed at countering the spread of weapons of mass destruction, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.<\/p>\n

Trump has\u00a0vowed to restore a “maximum pressure”<\/a>\u00a0campaign to isolate Iran from the global economy and drive its oil exports to zero, in order to stop the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

Trump hit Iran with\u00a0two waves of fresh sanctions<\/a>\u00a0in the first weeks of his second-term, targeting companies and the so-called\u00a0shadow<\/a>\u00a0fleet of ageing oil tankers that sail without Western insurance and transport crude from sanctioned countries.<\/p>\n
