WASHINGTON\/ADEN, Yemen, March 16 (Reuters) – The United States will keep attacking\u00a0Yemen’s Houthis<\/a>\u00a0until they end attacks on shipping, the U.S. defense secretary said on Sunday, as the Iran-aligned group signaled it could escalate in response to deadly U.S. strikes the day before.<\/p>\n

The airstrikes, which the Houthi-run health ministry said killed at least 31 people, are the biggest U.S. military operation in the Middle East since\u00a0President Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0took office in January. One U.S. official told Reuters the campaign might continue for weeks.<\/p>\n

The U.S. airstrikes that bombarded Yemen on Saturday targeted and “took out” multiple leaders of the Iranian-backed Houthis, White House national security adviser Mike Waltz said Sunday.\u00a0Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Waltz argued to co-anchor Martha Raddatz that these latest strikes differ from the countless strikes the Biden administration launched against the rebel group, which the Trump administration has designated a foreign terrorist organization.<\/p>\n

“These were not kind of pinprick, back and forth- what ultimately proved to be feckless attacks,” Waltz said. “This was an overwhelming response that actually targeted multiple Houthi leaders and took them out. And the difference here is, one, going after the Houthi leadership, and two, holding Iran responsible.”<\/p>\n

An alleged senior member of the Iranian regime has \u201cvoluntarily departed Canada\u201d days before she was to face deportation proceedings, Global News has learned.<\/p>\n

Elham Zandi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0left the country after the Canada Border Services Agency signaled its intention to expel her by asking the\u00a0Immigration and Refugee Board<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to hold a hearing.<\/p>\n

She is the third suspected high-ranking member of the Iranian government to depart Canada after being targeted under sanctions adopted just over two years ago.<\/p>\n
