Across Friday sermons, parliamentary speeches, and state broadcasts, officials have increasingly invoked the PMOI as a persistent internal threat and warned of destabilizing dissent fueled by socioeconomic collapse, political disillusionment, and public exposure to independent media.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On April 18, Intelligence Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1404\/01\/29\/3293923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Esmail Khatib warned<\/a> during a speech in North Khorasan that \u201cthe enemy is planning instability inside the country,\u201d and again framed the threat as internal, not foreign. He described any public anticipation around nuclear negotiations as a dangerous illusion: \u201cWe must not condition our national stability on the outcome of negotiations,\u201d he said, echoing the regime\u2019s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei\u2019s longstanding call for domestic resilience and rejection of \u201cfalse hopes.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On April 17, interim Friday prayer leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mehrnews.com\/news\/6438727\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmad Khatami delivered<\/a> a sermon in Tehran dismissing the importance of nuclear negotiations and insisting the regime\u2019s only trust must be in God\u2014not foreign diplomacy. Khatami blamed media narratives for creating societal polarization, warning, \u201cThe Americans and their media want to divide our society, to sell the idea that the key to solving our problems lies in negotiating with the United States.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former MOIS Interrogator Warns Against <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MEK?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MEK<\/a> Influence in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>, Calls for Internet Restrictions<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FKQS8AGR8F\">https:\/\/t.co\/FKQS8AGR8F<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1745188771602301035?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, on April 16, Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mizanonline.ir\/fa\/news\/4831026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghalibaf openly acknowledged<\/a> the regime\u2019s crumbling religious legitimacy in the capital, stating: \u201cIn Tehran, out of more than 600 mosques that should hold morning prayers, fewer than 10 percent are actually active.\u201d Drawing a direct line between religious disengagement and political vulnerability, he recalled the military operations carried out by the PMOI during the early 1980s and described the group as a once-covert threat that \u201cbrought bloodshed daily to the streets of Tehran.\u201d He warned that even now, \u201cthe continuation and preservation of the revolution depends on each and every heart of the people.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even voices within the regime&#8217;s own Parliament are publicly expressing alarm. On April 16, MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entekhab.ir\/fa\/news\/861285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abolfazl Aboutorabi told<\/a> a session of the Majlis that the \u201cenemy\u201d is banking on four points of pressure to ignite unrest: the nuclear talks, compulsory hijab, economic hardship, and the issue of foreign nationals. \u201cThey want to polarize society and incite chaos,\u201d he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps the most damning admission came from Amir Hossein Sabeti, an MP from Tehran, who on April 16 exposed regime infighting and the extent of ideological penetration by accusing officials of giving high-ranking posts to individuals with family ties to the PMOI. \u201cSomeone whose family belonged to the hypocrites [regime slur for PMOI] was appointed despite negative intelligence reports,\u201d he said during a televised Parliament session. \u201cWhat kind of administration is this? His remarks reflect growing concern that the regime is not just at war with foreign powers, but facing internal ideological decay\u2014and that the PMOI&#8217;s legacy of resistance continues to haunt and undermine the clerical dictatorship from within.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On April 14, Army Ground Forces Commander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asriran.com\/fa\/news\/1051563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kioumars Heydari stated<\/a> that the military remains \u201cin the field to stand against the hypocrites,\u201d framing the organization as an ongoing domestic threat. He added that the army had confronted the group \u201cwithout media coverage\u201d from 1996 to 2005, and emphasized that today&#8217;s ground forces are fully mobilized and restructured to respond rapidly to such internal challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These repeated invocations of the PMOI by regime officials are not nostalgic warnings about a past threat\u2014they are urgent admissions of fear in the face of a current and growing challenge.
