Police and\u00a0MI5<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0have foiled a suspected plot by Iranian terrorists to carry out a major attack in Britain.<\/p>\n

Counter-terror officers and Special Forces raided two suspected Iranian cells in a \u2018highly significant\u2019 operation to tackle growing activity by the hostile state in the UK.<\/p>\n

Sources said the alleged plot to target a UK premises was a \u2018major attack\u2019 that could have led to an imminent threat to life.\u00a0Home Secretary\u00a0Yvette Cooper<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0said last night that the arrests on Saturday \u2018reflect some of the biggest counter-state threat and counter-terrorism operations we have seen in recent years\u2019.<\/p>\n

Asked about possible links to the Iranian state, she said: \u2018These are major operations and the ongoing investigation is immensely important, and, of course, it involves Iranian nationals in both investigations.
