As the fifth round of nuclear talks continues in Rome, the Iranian regime is under intensifying pressure both from abroad and within. In the span of just days, the regime has faced new U.S. sanctions, harsh internal criticism, and growing unrest across the country.<\/p>\n

On May 23, the regime’s Foreign Ministry\u2019s spokesperson Esmail Baqai condemned<\/a> a new wave of U.S. sanctions targeting the regime\u2019s construction sector, calling them \u201cmalicious, illegal, and inhumane.\u201d The move, enacted by the U.S. under provisions aimed at countering weapons proliferation, expands sanctions on sectors linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). \u201cThis raises serious doubts about America\u2019s seriousness toward diplomacy,\u201d Baqai said defensively.<\/p>\n

On May 21, the regime\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced<\/a> European threats to trigger the JCPOA\u2019s snapback mechanism as \u201ccompletely illogical.\u201d Blaming the U.S. exit from the nuclear deal and Europe\u2019s failure to compensate economically, Araghchi said: \u201cWe reduced our commitments only after they failed to support Iran\u2019s economy. This threat has no legal or political basis. If Europe takes this step, it must accept the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n
