Iran: At Least 110 Executed in July \u2013 Is a Massacre Like 1988 Underway?<\/h3>\n

In its recent report, \u201cIs a Human Catastrophe Unfolding in Iran\u2019s Prisons?\u201d<\/em>, Iran Human Rights Monitor warns that following the 12-day war, the Islamic Republic has entered a new phase of physical elimination \u2014 a campaign aimed at exterminating political prisoners, with chilling parallels to the 1988 massacre of political detainees.<\/p>\n

At dawn on Sunday, July 27, political prisoners Behrooz Ehsani Eslamlou<\/strong> and Mehdi Hassani<\/strong> were executed in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj \u2014 killed in silence, without the chance to bid farewell to their families. They are the latest victims of a criminal and bloodstained regime that uses the death penalty systematically to crush dissent.<\/p>\n

Mehdi Hassani was arrested in September 2022 while attempting to leave the country in Zanjan. Behrouz Ehsani Eslamlou was arrested at his home in Tehran in December 2022. Both were later transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.<\/p>\n

According to HRANA, at the end of September 2024, Hassani and Eslamlou were tried at Branch 26 of Tehran\u2019s Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. They were convicted of membership in the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), baghi<\/em> (armed rebellion), moharebeh<\/em> (enmity against God), efsad-e-fel-arz<\/em> (corruption on earth), collecting classified information, and collusion against national security.<\/p>\n

CSIS Warns Threats from Iran in Canada Could Increase This Year, And It Is Using Criminals to Target Critics<\/h3>\n

Canada\u2019s spy agency is warning that threats from\u00a0Iran\u2019s<\/a> theocratic regime could increase this year and Tehran will continue to use members of criminal gangs to target its critics in Canada.\u00a0The\u00a0Canadian Security Intelligence Service<\/a>\u00a0told The Globe this week it is investigating death threats in Canada orchestrated by the republic of Iran. And depending on developments in the Middle East, such threats could escalate here, CSIS cautioned.<\/p>\n

The spy agency issued its warning after it emerged that\u00a0two Canadian journalists working for a London-based Persian news outlet<\/a>\u00a0have faced threats from Iran. One was told repeatedly they would be abducted, placed in a bag and smuggled out of the country if they did not stop reporting.<\/p>\n

Lebanon Slams Iran Opposition to Hezbollah Disarmament as \u2018Unacceptable\u2019<\/h3>\n

Lebanon slammed what it called \u201cflagrant and unacceptable interference\u201d by Iran on Saturday after an adviser to the Islamic Republic\u2019s supreme leader expressed opposition to the disarmament of its ally Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

The Lebanese cabinet ordered the army on Tuesday to draw up a plan to establish exclusive government control over weapons by the end of the year — a move that would mean disarming Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran is certainly opposed to the disarmament of Hezbollah,\u201d Ali Akbar Velayati, international affairs adviser to Ali Khamenei, was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.<\/p>\n

BCFIF Reiterates Call on UK Government to Intervene to Save Lives of Political Prisoners and Prevent Massacre in Iran’s Prisons<\/h3>\n

The British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCFIF) is alarmed over reports of Iranian authorities transferring another five political prisoners to Qezelhessar Prison on Friday, which is notorious for being an execution site. The five political prisoners\u00a0identified by campaigners<\/a>\u00a0as Vahid Bani Amerian, 33, Babak Alipour, 34, Shahrokh Daneshvarkar, 58, Mohammad Taghavi, 59, and Pouya Ghobadi, 33, were sentenced to death on charges of membership in the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) following unfair trials.<\/p>\n

Their transfer raises fear of the five being at risk of imminent execution as\u00a0it resembles the cases of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, two political prisoners executed recently by the regime<\/a>\u00a0on similar charges. Even behind bars, they took part in the \u201cNo to Executions Tuesdays\u201d. Their courage to stand up to injustice and tyranny is a source of hope and inspiration.<\/p>\n

As we warned previously, the surge in executions since 2022 nationwide protests, and in particular in recent months, indicate that the regime is preparing another massacre in the country\u2019s prison reminiscent of the 1988 mass executions. Like 37 ago, the regime is using the judiciary and politically motivated charges and execution to eliminate any organised opposition amid growing popular dissent.<\/p>\n
