The tone is unusually sharp, betraying a deeper anxiety: that the opposition movement\u2019s political reach, combined with its domestic resistance network, is eroding morale within the regime\u2019s own ranks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On August 8, in the city of Yasouj, Amin Mousavi, Khamenei\u2019s appointed Friday Prayer Leader, cautioned his audience against<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shabestan.news\/news\/1831986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> what he called<\/a> the PMOI\u2019s \u201cattractive\u201d rhetoric: \u201cThey speak very beautifully\u2014about a classless, monotheistic society, about helping the oppressed,\u201d he said, before labeling the group \u201c<em>Monafeqin<\/em>\u201d (Arabic for hypocrites, the regime\u2019s pejorative term for the PMOI) and accusing it of killing \u201cmore than 17,000\u201d people. Mousavi warned that vigilance was needed so that \u201cwhat happened in Libya\u201d would not happen in Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Birjand, Friday Prayer Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shabestan.news\/news\/1831974\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohammad Mokhtari pressed<\/a> the Ministry of Intelligence and other security bodies to \u201ctake the question of infiltration more seriously\u201d: \u201cWe have suffered the greatest harm in our history and during the revolution from infiltration. In the 1980s, we lost 17,000 [people]\u2014certainly because of infiltration. In the imposed war, we lost our best commanders and scientists for the same reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Officials in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tehran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tehran<\/a> Reveal Dread of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Mojahedineng<\/a> as Social Unrest Brews Nationwide<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pvUHNUFpLd\">https:\/\/t.co\/pvUHNUFpLd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1952328157069234545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"237\" data-end=\"704\">In a telling display of regime paranoia, the state-run daily<a href=\"https:\/\/kayhan.ir\/fa\/news\/316212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"306\">Kayhan<\/em> attempted<\/a> to tie the Paris-based headquarters of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to the Iranian opposition. \u201cThe FATF headquarters is in Paris\u2014the same city that for decades has hosted the <em>Monafeqin<\/em>,\u201d the paper declared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"1291\">The article warned that accepting FATF requirements would \u201cexpose the channels for bypassing sanctions\u201d and strengthen the West\u2019s ability to track Tehran\u2019s finances\u2014echoing past statements by Western officials advocating for stricter banking oversight to weaken the regime\u2019s \u201caxis of resistance.\u201d By placing the PMOI and FATF in the same breath, <em data-start=\"1055\" data-end=\"1063\">Kayhan<\/em> revealed not just opposition to financial transparency but an enduring fear that international institutions and its arch enemies are part of a single, coordinated front aimed at dismantling the regime\u2019s survival mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The alarm has also reached the regime\u2019s foreign policy apparatus. On August 8, Ali Bagheri Kani, secretary of the Supreme Council of Strategic Foreign Relations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etemadonline.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%B3%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B3%DB%8C-9\/728806-%D8%B2%D9%86%DA%AF%D8%B2%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%B1%DB%8C-%DA%A9%D9%86%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%BE%D8%A7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lashed out at European countries<\/a> for hosting PMOI gatherings:\u00a0\u201cSome European countries have taken in these executioners of the 1980s and let them hold meetings. We must make such reckless actions costly for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Internal Rifts and MEK Threat Leave Iran\u2019s Regime in a State of Fear <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b8JWIgvUll\">https:\/\/t.co\/b8JWIgvUll<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; M. Khansari (@khansari_m) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/khansari_m\/status\/1894019746594521482?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within the Revolutionary Guard, Khamenei\u2019s representative Abdollah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khabaronline.ir\/news\/2098292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haji-Sadeghi acknowledged<\/a> a vulnerability that officials rarely voice in public: \u201cThe enemies thought the people would no longer follow the leadership, that the arms of the revolution in the region had been cut, and that only one shock was needed for the country to collapse from within. We must not allow the\u00a0<em>Monafeqin<\/em>\u00a0and the enemy to claim the great victory for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The judiciary has been even more explicit about the PMOI\u2019s effect on regime morale. The state-run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mizanonline.ir\/fa\/amp\/news\/4849369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mizan News Agency wrote<\/a> on August 3: \u201cThe Mojahedin used social media and Persian-language satellite channels to spread rumors with the aim of creating despair in society and projecting weakness and defeat among Iran\u2019s armed forces. Experience has shown that during national crises, the Mojahedin become more active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This admission\u2014that the PMOI can influence the armed forces\u2019 perception of their own strength\u2014cuts to the core of the regime\u2019s fear. In a system that relies on ideological loyalty and the readiness of its security apparatus to suppress dissent, even small cracks in morale carry strategic risk.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>\u2019s Top Officials Warn of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Mojahedineng<\/a> Influence and Looming Revolt<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uJxSXN18t9\">https:\/\/t.co\/uJxSXN18t9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1913336622310891951?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 18, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the state broadcaster\u2019s newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/jamejamonline.ir\/fa\/news\/1513275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Jam-e Jam<\/em> underscored<\/a> the persistence of the threat by highlighting an ongoing trial: \u201cA court is currently underway for 104 members of the <em>Monafeqin<\/em>\u2014showing the continuing security threat this group poses to the system. With the intensification of the Mojahedin\u2019s activities, their role and position in Iran\u2019s political landscape have once again come into focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taken together, these statements reveal a layered concern. Publicly, the clerics and officials speak of \u201cterrorism\u201d and \u201cinfiltration.\u201d Beneath the rhetoric lies a recognition that the PMOI\u2019s endurance\u2014its ability to organize, to secure high-profile platforms abroad, and to reach audiences inside Iran\u2014has strategic consequences. The regime fears not just the opposition\u2019s message, but the effect that message has on the cohesion and confidence of its own forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"64\" data-end=\"506\">In a political climate already strained by economic crisis, regional setbacks, and the aftermath of costly conflicts, the regime\u2019s own officials betray a deeper anxiety: that the greatest threat is not a foreign airstrike or international isolation, but an explosive society at home.
