As international sanctions under the UN \u201csnapback\u201d mechanism return, Tehran\u2019s leaders are relying on bold rhetoric rather than credible strategy. Officials from parliament, the Supreme National Security Council, and state-controlled media have issued a cascade of threats \u2014 from labeling European leaders \u201cterrorists\u201d to urging nuclear bomb tests \u2014 in what amounts to propaganda for a shaken support base rather than genuine policy.<\/p>\n

Parliamentarians talk of \u201cterrorist\u201d Europe and the bomb<\/h2>\n

Hosseinali Haji Deligani, a member of the regime’s parliament (Majlis), insisted on September 20, 2025,<\/a> that \u201cit is necessary for parliament to pass a resolution to designate European leaders as \u2018terrorists.\u2019\u201d He dismissed the sanctions as \u201cmerely a psychological operation whose goal is to affect the country\u2019s economy,\u201d and warned that \u201cone of parliament\u2019s options can be discussion of withdrawal from the NPT.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahmad Naderi, a presidium member of parliament, went further on X, writing<\/a>: \u201cOnly way to preserve Iran\u2019s territorial integrity and national security is to obtain nuclear weapons. Exiting the NPT, adopting ambiguity, and ultimately testing a nuclear bomb is the only option\u2026 Time has come to make tough but necessary decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, called the return of UN sanctions \u201cillegal and unlawful\u201d and declared that the Cairo accord with the IAEA \u201chas been destroyed.\u201d He added<\/a>: \u201cThere is no longer any reason for continued cooperation with the agency or to remain in the NPT\u2026 Iran must redesign the 40-megawatt Arak reactor and build new-generation centrifuges.”<\/p>\n

Kazem Gharibabadi, deputy foreign minister, dismissed<\/a> the UN Security Council\u2019s snapback decision as meaningless, insisting that \u201cin practice, at present we have no enrichment activities.\u201d He also warned that while reinstated sanctions would take \u201cseven to eight days\u201d to come into effect, \u201ctheir psychological impact must be considered and managed immediately by the relevant institutions\u201d<\/p>\n
