Unable to defeat the Resistance through massacres or politically, the regime has built one of the world’s most elaborate demonization machines.

This machinery encompasses state-controlled media, front organizations disguised as NGOs, turncoat ex-members, cyber armies numbering 80,000 operatives, and sophisticated influence operations targeting Western think tanks, universities, and parliaments. At its core, the regime seeks to promote a single narrative: that the MEK, as the principal opposition, has no real support inside Iran, and that there is no viable alternative to the current regime. By portraying the MEK as illegitimate, isolated, or extremist, Tehran aims to convince international community that they must deal with the clerical regime as the only option, thereby discouraging international engagement with the Iranian Resistance and weakening support among Iranians.

The campaign is not abstract. Western lawmakers and dignitaries have been personally targeted. Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt faced immediate defamation after speaking at an MEK event. UK parliamentarians have warned of Iranian intelligence agents posing as constituents. American authorities have arrested covert operatives like Kaveh Afrasiabi, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by Tehran to pose as an “academic” while spreading propaganda.

Revelations in 2023 about the Iran Experts Initiative (IEI) further exposed how Tehran penetrated Western think tanks and policy circles, enlisting academics to advocate engagement with the regime while dismissing the NCRI as a viable alternative.

Despite these efforts, Tehran’s campaign has failed to erase the Resistance. The very ferocity of the demonization proves the MEK’s relevance. Internatioanl leaders from across the political spectrum have testified that the regime’s obsession with the MEK is the strongest evidence of its effectiveness and legitimacy.

Inside Iran, MEK Resistance Units continue to challenge the regime daily, coordinating protests and acts of defiance. Abroad, the NCRI and its President-elect Mrs. Maryam Rajavi offer a democratic vision through a widely supported Ten-Point Plan, endorsed by thousands of lawmakers worldwide.

The key point is that articles, reports, and narratives smearing the MEK should be approached with scrutiny rather than accepted at face value. They are often the direct product of Tehran’s influence operations. Anonymous accounts smeared her reputation; articles suddenly surfaced in obscure outlets branding her as naïve or manipulated; and coordinated messages flooded social media, all echoing the same talking points against Iran’s main opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). “They unleashed a flood,” she later recalled in a European Parliament address, “and I could see it was not spontaneous. For the ayatollahs, the challenge is especially acute. From the earliest days of the Islamic Republic, Iran’s rulers identified the MEK not as a marginal opponent but as their most dangerous adversary.

In June 1980, just months after consolidating power, Ayatollah Khomeini, then the Supreme Leader, declared: “The enemy is not America, nor the Soviet Union. In late July 1988, several political activists held in prisons across Iran suddenly disappeared. They were young men and women, some of whom had been arrested years ago in their teens and imprisoned simply for their political opinions and peaceful activities such as distributing opposition leaflets and attending demonstrations. Most of them were supporters of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) Khomeini labeled the MEK as Hypocrites and decreed: If the person at any stage [of the judicial process] maintains his or her support for the MEK, the sentence is execution. Annihilate the enemies of Islam, immediately. In his decree, Khomeini ordered the formation of three-member panels, known as “Death Commissions”. Each panel included a religious judge, prosecutor, and a representative from the Ministry of Intelligence. Death Commissions were formed in at least 96 cities to put an end to MEK in Iran. Khomeini’s most ardent loyalists were appointed to the commission. They included current president Ebrahim Raisi, who in 1988 was Tehran’s Deputy Prosecutor and ordered the execution of MEK prisoners. For months, victims’ families desperately sought information about their loved ones. They heard nothing but lies from the authorities. Ultimately, they began to learn the devastating truth. Their loved ones had been secretly executed and buried in mass graves. In 2016, an audio file of a secret meeting that was held at the height of the mass killing emerged. In the recording, from August 1988, members of the Tehran Death Commission can be heard discussing the operation with Khomeini’s heir apparent. Khomeini’s successor Hossein Ali Montazeri can be heard criticizing members of the Death Commission including Ebrahim Raisi for carrying out the massacre. Montazeri’s criticism ended with his dismissal by Khomeini as the country’s next Supreme Leader. This crime against humanity has drawn international attention. In September 2020, seven UN Special Rapporteurs wrote a letter to Iranian authorities decrying the 1988 massacre. They reported that between July and September 1988, Iranian authorities forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed thousands of imprisoned political dissidents affiliated with political opposition groups in 32 cities in secret and discarded their bodies mostly in unmarked mass graves. In May 2021, more than 150 former UN officials and renowned international human rights and legal experts wrote to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, calling for an international Commission of Inquiry into the 1988 massacre. But 3 decades on, the perpetrators remain in high positions of power. In July 2019, then-minister of justice and current adviser to the Chief of the Judiciary Mostafa Pourmohammadi, who was a member of the Death Commission in 1988, claimed that the elimination of the MEK must continue based on Khomeini’s fatwa. The perpetrators of the 1988 massacre have never been held accountable. Today they are continuing the clampdown on dissent with impunity. That includes the arrest, torture, and execution of MEK supporters and anti-regime protesters. On June 19, 2021, one of the main perpetrators of the 1988 massacre and a member of the Tehran Death Commission, Ebrahim Raisi, was appointed as the regime’s president. Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard has said that Ebrahim Raisi should be investigated for crime against humanity instead of taking up the presidency. In 2018, Amnesty International documented how Ebrahim Raisi had been a member of the ‘death commission’ which forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed in secret thousands of political dissidents in Evin and Gohardasht prisons near Tehran in 1988. To neutralize this threat, Tehran deploys a multi-layered psychological warfare campaign to isolate the MEK internationally and dishearten Iranians domestically.

The strategy is straightforward: by portraying the MEK—the principal opposition—as marginal, extremist, or a “cult,” the regime seeks to convince both domestic and international audiences that it has no real support inside Iran and that no alternative exists. One of the main goals of the Iranian regime's demonization campaign against the MEK has been to spread the narrative that the MEK is a fringe group, a cult with no popular base inside Iran. A quick look at the statistics of some articles published against the MEK by the Iranian regime proves the opposite: The Iranian regime has produced more than 198 movies, documentaries, and television series against the MEK, which are broadcast and rebroadcast on various TV channels of the regime, including 881 programs. The regime has published more than 550 books against the MEK. In 20 years, the Nejat Society, affiliated with Iran's Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS), has posted more than 25,331 articles against the MEK. That means 3 to 4 pieces or video clips a day for twenty straight years. In 8 years, Faraq, another MOIS-affiliated website, has posted more than 12,501 articles against MEK. That means 4 to 5 articles a day for eight straight years. The MOIS-affiliated Habilian website has posted 17,563 articles against MEK in the past 17 years. That is, for 17 straight years, an average of 2 to 3 articles daily. The main task of the Revolutionary Guard Corps' cyber army is to demonize the MEK in cyberspace. According to Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of the IRGC's Basij Organization, more than 80,000 Basij are active in cyberspace. Now the question is if the MEK has no popular base in Iran and is a fringe group, why is the regime so fearful of the MEK, and why should it spend so much on such a group? Millions of articles on dozens of websites at home and abroad 198 movies 881 documentary films 550 copies of books A cyber army of at least 80,000 And spending millions of dollars to publish articles in the western media against the MEK. The answer is clear. The Iranian regime considers the MEK, and its popular base, as the main threat to its existence. Ruhollah Mo’men Nasab, a former head of the Culture Ministry’s Digital Media Center and the very person who asked the Iranian regime’s judiciary to subpoena Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2014, was partially admitting to what he called “old information” in an interview on March 28. Some turncoat ex-members of the MEK, recruited by the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), are packaged as “credible sources.” They are coached to follow the so-called 80/20 rule: criticize the regime 80% of the time to build trust, and dedicate the remaining 20% to attacking the MEK.

These “critics” then serve as sources for major outlets. In 2019, Der Spiegel published a lengthy feature portraying the MEK’s Albanian headquarters in sinister terms. Subsequent investigations revealed that much of the reporting relied on MOIS-linked ex-members turned regime collaborators, whose accounts were riddled with inconsistencies. One of its central sources, Gholamreza Shekari, claimed to have been “imprisoned and tortured” by the MEK 24 years earlier.

Yet even before the article appeared in German, the MOIS’s own front group, the Nejat Association, published a Persian translation of Shekari’s interview on November 24, 2018 — the very date Der Spiegel had originally planned to release the piece. This remarkable timing exposed that the draft text had been shared in advance with Tehran’s intelligence services, a blatant violation of journalistic ethics. Subsequent investigations further revealed glaring inconsistencies in the accounts of these regime-linked turncoat ex-members. Instead of upholding responsible journalism, Der Spiegel provided a platform for state propaganda, misleading readers with material effectively authored and pre-approved by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence.

Following the publication of Der Spiegel’s defamatory feature “Prisoners of Rebellion” on February 16, 2019, the German representative office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) brought the case before the Hamburg Regional Court. On March 21, 2019, the Press Chamber ruled in favor of the NCRI, prohibiting Der Spiegel from publishing or repeating allegations of torture and grotesque claims—such as MEK members “practicing cutting throats with knives three times a week”—on the grounds that these assertions were demonstrably false and violated basic journalistic standards. The court warned that any future infringement would result in fines of up to €250,000 or imprisonment. Both the compound, Ashraf 3, and the MEK have been targets of extensive disinformation campaigns by the Iranian regime. The same court ordered a similar case for another news publication, Der Spiegel, in March 2019. That publication, too, published an article that conveyed similar allegations against the MEK in general, and Ashraf-3 in Albania in particular. Both Der Spiegel and FAZ provided a platform for individuals who presented themselves as former MEK members and portrayed themselves as having fled their Albanian residence in the wake of mistreatment at the hands of MEK leadership in Albania. But the NCRI’s legal challenge identified the originators of these allegations as operatives for, or collaborators with, Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). In the past two years, similar allegations from the same sources have been published in Britain’s Channel 4, Al-Jazeera English, BBC, and The New York Times. This has been an organized campaign by the Iranian regime to demonize and discredit the MEK BUT WHY? While the Iranian regime’s constantly been engaging in spreading misinformation about the Iranian opposition, these efforts took on a new scale as popular protests began emerging across Iran at the end of 2017, in which were chanted MEK slogans such as “death to the dictator.” These slogans gained popular support in Iran despite the regime’s disinformation campaign against MEK & NCRI. The Regime Change message of the 2018 uprising reflected the MEK’s platform, while its spontaneous spread reflected a high level of organization that is only possible in the presence of a well-developed network of MEK activists. This is what the regime fears most and why it goes to great lengths to distract people from joining the resistance. In January 2018, the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei publicly accused the MEK of planning and facilitating the 2018 uprising. That in turn set the stage for another nationwide protest in November 2019, which once again showcased MEK leadership and explicit calls for regime change. Having no way out of crises, the Iranian regime sees no other way out of its current dilemma than engaging in a reprehensible campaign of demonization of the MEK. The goals are: - Discrediting a viable alternative to the ruling theocracy that has succeeded both in organizing protests within Iran, and in disrupting the Iranian regime’s terrorist activities and destructive policies. - Preparing the ground for terrorist attacks justified by such propaganda. The flip side of this coin is the forced televised confessions of prisoners to discredit the resistance against the regime. The Associated Press in a report published on June 25, 2020, wrote: “state television has broadcast the suspected coerced confessions of at least 355 people over the last decade as a means to both suppress dissent and frighten activists in the Islamic Republic on behalf of security services.” In a nutshell, terrified of the enthusiasm exhibited by young people towards the MEK and the cause of regime change, and International support for the resistance, the regime desperately needs to either eliminate or isolate the democratic resistance movement, by fake news and demonizing campaign. #Iran #MEK #PMOI #NCRI #Rajavi #Mojahedin #Mujahedeen #Ashraf-3 #Ashraf #Albania Read More: https://www.ncr-iran.org https://www.facebook.com/IranNCR/ https://twitter.com/iran_policy Subscribe to NCRI weekly newsletter t.ly/MybJ">

Similarly, The New York Times has faced criticism for uncritically citing such voices. The Times never replied. The full extent of this deception became clear on March 4, 2025, when the article’s central source, Abdolrahman Mohammadian, wrote to the UN Secretary-General admitting that he had been recruited by the MOIS in 2016 and had coordinated the activities of other regime agents as part of a broader disinformation campaign. He was presenting himself to policymakers and journalists as an independent expert on foreign relations. Court documents reveal that he was paid at least 265,000 dollars during the past 13 years for his service to Iran’s theocratic dictatorship. Afrasiabi, who holds a PhD, is by no means the only Western-educated asset to successfully lobby for years on behalf of the Iranian regime. In 2009, he even assisted a member of the US Congress in drafting a letter to then-President Barack Obama which expressed support for a fuel swap agreement that Tehran itself had proposed. That fact alone should be recognized as a sign of how deeply Iranian assets have managed to penetrate into Western policy circles and the media landscape. If a suspected Iranian asset has made separate statements that are critical of Iranian human rights violations or other malign activities, it is no proof that they aren’t dedicated to the mission of promoting Western policies that are more favorable to Tehran. This defense was attempted by Trita Parsi, the founder of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), in a defamation suit against those who accused the organization of allegiance to the Iranian regime, but was rejected by district court judge John Bates. “Even a moderately competent agent of the Iranian regime would at times take pains to distance themselves from some policies of the regime,” Bates explained in the context of his decision to reject Parsi’s defamation claims. He then went on to add that even if unproven, the allegations of NIAC were well-founded on the basis of the “overwhelming” pattern of political alignment between the Iranian regime and the supposedly self-funded American NGO. The source of NIAC’s funding has never been credibly identified, and Parsi himself was compelled by the lawsuit to acknowledge that initial claims regarding the existence of over 4,000 donor-members were erroneous. NIAC’s ongoing advocacy for pro-Iranian positions has only cast more suspicion on the organization over the past decade, yet it has been permitted to continue lobbying openly throughout that time. Of course, many serious critics of the Iranian regime have been arguing for closer scrutiny of the mission and loyalty of groups like NIAC since long before Afrasiabi’s arrest. Last year, Senators Mike Braun, Ted Cruz, and Tom Cotton wrote to the Attorney General’s office urging a formal investigation into the Iran lobby. The letter highlighted a number of specific examples of NIAC downplaying Tehran culpability for its own malign behaviors and amplifying Iranian talking points that described the US as being at fault for crises such as militant attacks on the American embassy in Baghdad. In the near term, the Afrasiabi case should motivate a more serious response to anyone who raises alarms over similar lobbying efforts by NIAC, Parsi, or any similar organization or individual. It is primarily thanks to individuals like Afrasiabi that some Western governments tend to operate on the assumption that the Iranian regime is stable, powerful, and free from serious domestic threats to the theocratic system. That assumption began to lose support in January 2018 when the Iranian people staged the first of three anti-government uprisings under the leadership of the NCRI’s main constituent group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI-MEK). But it has still been clinging to life as some Western policymakers and news outlets have continued to lend their ear to figures like Trita Parsi who insist, quite absurdly, that support for such pro-democracy movements would be the greatest threat to the illusory promise of internal reform of the Iranian regime. Rather, it was about recycling decades-old allegations, dressing up propaganda in legal garb, and broadcasting it through a tightly controlled media blitz. Billboards across Tehran, saturation coverage by state-run outlets, and uniform headlines left no doubt: the trial was designed for mass consumption at home and abroad.

The very choice of defendants exposed the charade. Among those listed was Ozra Alavi Taleghani, a prominent MEK member who had passed away in Tirana months before the proceedings began. Court-appointed lawyers were announced, but no independent defense was permitted. Instead of evidence or cross-examination, the sessions descended into long recitations of regime talking points about the MEK’s history, structure, and supposed “threat,” with prosecutors explicitly likening the organization to ISIS and vowing revenge. Families of alleged “victims” were staged in the courtroom, their presence serving as props for the prosecutor’s promises of retribution.

For the regime, the timing and scope of this sham trial reveal a deeper anxiety. The MEK has gained traction among Iran’s younger generations, who increasingly see the Resistance as a viable democratic alternative. By staging a court proceeding, the regime attempted to add a new layer of legitimacy to its demonization campaign, hoping to discredit the MEK in the eyes of ordinary Iranians. Yet the move has backfired. Even inside the ruling elite, critics warn that the trial has exposed the regime’s insecurity and may only fuel curiosity and sympathy for the Resistance.

State-run media such as Fars News were blunt in framing the trial as a battle against “internal enemies.” “The danger of the hypocrites is greater than other enemies,” one editorial claimed, insisting that “the Quran has directed its toughest attacks against the hypocrites.” But the reality was plain to observers: the court devoted more time to demonizing the MEK than to presenting evidence of actual crimes, underscoring that the true purpose was political theatre.

The contradictions have not gone unnoticed. While the sham court demonized the MEK as terrorists, the regime’s own record—over 100,000 members and supporters of the MEK executed, more than 500 terrorist operations abroad, and plots like the 2018 attempted bombing of an NCRI rally in Paris—stands in stark contrast. The attack on former European Parliament Vice President Alejo Vidal-Quadras in 2023, widely attributed to Tehran’s operatives, has yet to face any legal reckoning. This selective “justice” has reinforced the perception that the trial was designed only to justify repression and delegitimize the alternative posed by the NCRI.

By September 2025, as the sessions dragged on, fractures within the regime became clear. Some insiders argued that the spectacle had backfired, fueling international criticism and strengthening the MEK’s image as the only organized opposition the regime truly fears. Others insisted on continuing, believing the propaganda value outweighed the risks. These disputes highlight what the trial most of all revealed: a regime divided, insecure, and terrified of a Resistance that it cannot silence through executions, terror plots, or now, even through sham courts.

Western Voices of Warning

Countless Western dignitaries and senior officials have exposed this demonization campaign.
