Canada Announces Implementation of UN Sanctions Against Iran Over Nuclear Proliferation Activities<\/h3>\n

Iran\u2019s nuclear proliferation activities remain a serious threat to regional and international security. Despite repeated calls from the international community to limit its nuclear program to exclusively peaceful purposes and to fully restore cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran continues to ignore its international obligations and commitments.<\/p>\n

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced amendments to the\u00a0Regulations Implementing the United Nations Resolutions on Iran<\/em>\u00a0(UN Iran Regulations<\/em>), reimposing previously terminated United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against Iran in response to its continued nuclear activities.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s announcement is consistent with Canada\u2019s obligations as a Member State of the United Nations under Article 25 of the UN Charter.<\/p>\n

UK Reimposes UN Sanctions on Iran<\/h3>\n

On 28 August 2025, the Foreign Ministers of the UK, France and Germany (the E3) notified the UN Security Council (UNSC) to trigger the mechanism to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran due to significant Iranian non-performance of its Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) commitments.\u00a0Today, the UK has reimposed those sanctions, following an end to the \u201csnapback\u201d process. Today\u2019s sanctions include the reapplication of 121 designations on individuals and entities involved in Iran\u2019s nuclear and ballistic missiles programme.<\/p>\n

This follows an announcement by the UK on the 29 September to apply sanctions on over 70 Iranian individuals and organisations linked to Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.\u00a0UN Iran sanctions have been reimposed following the re-instatement of six UNSC resolutions related to Iran\u2019s nuclear proliferation activities on 28 September 2025.<\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkiye Follows US Sanctions on Iran with Asset Freezes<\/h3>\n

T<\/strong>\u00fcrkiye froze the assets of numerous individuals and entities connected to Iran’s uranium enrichment activities on Wednesday, coordinating with broader international efforts to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program.<\/p>\n

The decision, issued Oct. 1 under presidential decree number 10438, targets people and organizations involved in Iran’s nuclear development program. The move comes as the United States imposed parallel sanctions on Iranian weapons procurement networks, marking a coordinated response to renewed concerns about Iran’s nuclear capabilities.<\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkiye’s asset freezes affect individuals and companies across multiple sectors, including Iranian nuclear facilities, shipping companies, energy firms, and research centers. Among the targeted entities are the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, several banks, and companies involved in uranium conversion and nuclear fuel production.<\/p>\n

Supporting Snapback of UN Sanctions on Iran with Additional Sanctions<\/h3>\n

The United States today announces the imposition of sanctions\u00a0in support of the\u00a0\u201csnapback\u201d of\u00a0UN sanctions and restrictions on Iran for \u201csignificant non-performance\u201d\u00a0of its nuclear commitments.\u00a0\u00a0As President Trump has made clear, Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.\u00a0\u00a0Today, we\u00a0are\u00a0designating\u00a044 individuals and entities\u00a0involved in Iran\u2019s nuclear program and weapons procurement networks supporting ballistic missile and military\u00a0aircraft\u00a0programs.<\/p>\n

Of these targets, the Department of State is imposing sanctions on five individuals and one entity\u00a0connected to Iran\u2019s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research\u00a0(SPND),\u00a0which is\u00a0the direct successor to Iran\u2019s pre-2004 nuclear weapon program.\u00a0\u00a0A number of\u00a0the\u00a0persons\u00a0sanctioned in\u00a0this action\u00a0have\u00a0sought\u00a0to obtain sensitive dual-use technologies and technical\u00a0expertise\u00a0applicable\u00a0to nuclear weapons\u00a0development.<\/p>\n

30 Political Prisoners Demand Return of Women Inmates from Qarchak Prison to Evin<\/h3>\n

On Wednesday, September 30, 2025, thirty political prisoners held in Tehran\u2019s Evin Prison issued a joint statement condemning the \u201cinhuman conditions\u201d faced by female political prisoners in Qarchak Prison, Varamin. The signatories held the death of political prisoner Somayeh Rashidi directly accountable to the negligence and incompetence of the Iranian judiciary and prison authorities, demanding the immediate transfer of female political prisoners back from Qarchak to Evin. The statement stressed that the \u201crecurring deaths inside Iranian prisons\u201d are the result of structural dysfunction, lack of independent oversight, and the deliberate denial of the most basic rights of prisoners\u2014a pattern, they warned, that will persist until fundamental reforms in prison policies are enacted.<\/p>\n
