Yet his remarks came just weeks after 70 members of parliament publicly called for that same fatwa to be reversed\u2014arguing that Iran must build and maintain a bomb for \u201cdeterrence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1459\" data-end=\"1658\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/iranian-officials-issue-nuclear-threats-amid-growing-international-pressure-on-nuclear-and-missile-programs\/\">Similar appeals have surfaced<\/a> repeatedly since early 2023, from former foreign ministerial advisers to senior national security figures. In Tehran\u2019s Friday sermon on October 31, the interim Friday prayer leader Mohammad Javad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mashreghnews.ir\/news\/1760777\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haj-Ali Akbari conceded<\/a> that delayed intervention had inflicted \u201cserious harm to public trust.\u201d The problem, he claimed, was not merely corruption\u2014but the inability of institutions to enforce discipline or deliver accountability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2340\" data-end=\"2963\">In Arak, Friday prayer leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irna.ir\/news\/85982980\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dorri Najafabadi acknowledged<\/a> that \u201cthe bank\u2019s money is the people\u2019s money\u201d and demanded accountability from exporters and managers. We did not capture a pilot,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was all untrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3950\" data-end=\"4238\">This admission undercuts the regime\u2019s core narrative of strength, the mythology used to reassure its base that sacrifice is meaningful and loyalty worthwhile. For years, military spectacle has functioned as a substitute for economic performance and political legitimacy. When an insider concedes that these spectacles were staged, morale erodes inside the very institutions tasked with enforcing obedience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4240\" data-end=\"4742\">Friday prayer pulpits have also begun to reflect that anxiety. Across Tehran, Mashhad, Arak, and Abadan, senior clerics devoted their weekly addresses not to foreign foes but to internal loyalty. They warned of \u201cdivision,\u201d accused those advocating diplomacy of \u201cStockholm Syndrome,\u201d and demanded unity against unnamed actors within the system itself. In a widely discussed column in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etemadonline.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%B3%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B3%DB%8C-9\/744500-%D8%B9%D8%A8%D8%AF%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%B9%D9%87-%D8%AE%D8%B4%D9%86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em data-start=\"5057\" data-end=\"5065\">Etemad<\/em>, Abbas Abdi argued<\/a> that capital punishment no longer restores order; it expands the circle of violence. The question is no longer moral or strategic; it is psychological. The regime is trying to convince itself that it still possesses agency. A confident state does not insist upon its restraint. A confident state does not reassure its public of its capabilities. A confident state does not fear that unity must be enforced\u2014or rely on executions to keep society in check.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1086\">The clerical dictatorship today is not debating whether to build a bomb.
