Canada Spy Agency Says It Foiled Potentially ‘Lethal Threats’ By Iran<\/h3>\n

OTTAWA, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Canada’s domestic spy agency this year foiled potentially lethal threats by Iran directed against people whom Tehran sees as enemies, the agency’s head said in a rare speech on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Dan Rogers, director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, also said his agents had blocked attempts by Russia to illegally acquire Canadian goods and technologies.<\/p>\n

Rogers, appointed in February, spoke as he presented an annual update on security challenges facing Canada. CSIS directors seldom appear in public.<\/p>\n

Every military commander knows that hope is not a plan. Success depends on anticipating threats and developing contingencies before the first shot is fired. The United States and its allies must apply the same principle to the threat posed by Iran\u2019s clerical regime. Failing to do so would be a strategic dereliction of duty. A contingency plan for confronting and ultimately neutralizing that threat is not only wise\u2014it is an\u00a0imperative.<\/p>\n

In remarks carried by state media\u00a0last week, Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi issued a warning to the United States and its allies about the supposed growth of the regime\u2019s \u201cmissile power.\u201d Though much of Iran\u2019s stockpile of ballistic missiles was reportedly destroyed\u2014alongside much of its production capacity\u2014during its twelve-day war with Israel in June, Tehran\u2019s officials have sought to downplay the impact in order to preserve their self-image as a regional power still in control.<\/p>\n

What is Reza Pahlavi\u2019s Endgame?<\/h3>\n

Since his father\u2019s passing, the name\u00a0Reza Pahlavi<\/a>\u00a0has hovered over the Iranian opposition diaspora like a dark cloud. The exiled heir of the\u00a0widely resented Pahlavi dynasty<\/a>\u00a0remains a living reminder of why Iranians rose up against his father\u2019s rule. Yet, never one to pass up a chance at reclaiming the Peacock Throne, Pahlavi regularly launches initiatives that debut with fanfare and publicity\u2014only to fade into bleak irrelevance.<\/p>\n

The latest example is the \u201c100 Cities \u2013 One Voice\u201d project, unveiled at the Munich Security Conference on February 16 with Pahlavi in attendance. The plan promised synchronized demonstrations worldwide, rallying Iranians under his banner. Its first action, slated for April 19, was to span 19 cities. In practice, only 14 events materialized; the largest, in Frankfurt, reportedly drew roughly 20 people. Other \u201cgatherings\u201d were so small that a single person at a table with flags could be counted as an \u201caction in support of Reza Pahlavi.\u201d Project-affiliated websites and social accounts avoided attendance figures and offered no verifiable photos or video, even as they claimed participation in as many as 45 cities.<\/p>\n

I overcame this serious illness thanks to an outstanding surgeon and an exceptional oncologist \u2014 whose names I am not mentioning because I do not have their permission and because, like all those who are truly great in their professions, they neither seek nor need publicity.<\/p>\n

Once this grueling ordeal was behind me and I had recovered, exactly two years ago a hitman sent by the criminal and terrorist regime of the Iranian ayatollahs fired a shot at me \u2014 aimed directly at my throat, which would have been instantly fatal. But at the very last moment I moved my head to the side, causing the projectile to strike my right jaw and pass through my face.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, according to eyewitnesses who described repeated jerking motions of the weapon in the attacker\u2019s hands, it appears the gun jammed, preventing him from finishing me off with several more shots.<\/p>\n

Treasury Disrupts Iran\u2019s Transnational Missile and UAV Procurement Networks<\/h3>\n

WASHINGTON\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is targeting 32 individuals and entities based in Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), T\u00fcrkiye, China, Hong Kong, India, Germany, and Ukraine that operate multiple procurement networks supporting Iran\u2019s ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) production.<\/p>\n

\u201cAcross the globe, Iran exploits financial systems to launder funds, procure components for its nuclear and conventional weapons programs, and support its terrorist proxies,\u201d said\u00a0Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John K. Hurley.\u00a0 \u201cAt the direction of President Trump, we are putting maximum pressure on Iran to end its nuclear threat.\u00a0 The United States also expects the international community to fully implement UN snapback sanctions on Iran to cut off its access to the global financial system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swedish Government Agency Cooperated with Radical Imams \u2013 Despite Warning Signs<\/h3>\n

During the pandemic, the Swedish Agency for Support to Faith Communities (SST) enlisted the help of religious leaders to spread information about COVID-19. A review by Kvartal<\/em> shows that several of the imams who participated had previously been flagged for ties to extremist environments \u2014 and that the agency neither reacted nor withdrew the videos.<\/p>\n

At the same time, reports began circulating that the center was being exploited by the intelligence service of Iran\u2019s caliphate-style dictatorship. The Swedish Security Service (S\u00e4po) later concluded that representatives of the center had been in contact with Iranian security actors and that the facility had been used as a base for intelligence operations in Sweden. In connection with this, the government decided to deport Hakimollahi.<\/p>\n

Despite S\u00e4po\u2019s findings, the organization he represented \u2014 the Islamic Shia Communities in Sweden \u2014 continued to receive millions in SST grants funded by Swedish taxpayers. Only after new democratic requirements were introduced was the federation denied further support.<\/p>\n

According to Amani, the Iranian intelligence service has targeted him and his family. \u201cI am afraid that the intelligence service might approach my children through other channels. Amani, a middle-aged man, appears to be unsafe even in North Rhine-Westphalia \u2014 in the middle of Germany \u2014 from the very regime he fled when he left his homeland for Cologne.<\/p>\n

Zahra Tabari, a retired engineer from the Gilan Regional Electricity Company and mother of two, has been sentenced to death solely for possessing a banner inscribed with the slogan \u201cWoman, Resistance, Freedom\u201d and for keeping an unpublished audio file.<\/p>\n

She was charged with \u201csupporting the\u00a0People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran<\/a>\u00a0(PMOI)\u201d and condemned to death following a ten-minute court hearing.<\/p>\n

Prior to this, she had already served one year of imprisonment under electronic surveillance.<\/p>\n
