How A Regional Reset Has Left Isolated Iran Fighting to Stay Relevant<\/h3>\n

While\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0has lived with international isolation for decades, from the\u00a01979 embassy takeover<\/a>\u00a0to the long war with\u00a0Iraq<\/a>\u00a0in the 1980s, observers say the pressures it is facing today are of a different order. Old alliances are collapsing and the country is struggling to keep its footing in a rapidly shifting region.<\/p>\n

The breaking point came after United States President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018. Prior to this, Tehran had spent years trying to open up to the world through president Hassan Rouhani and foreign minister Javad Zarif. Their approach was dependent upon European support. When\u00a0Washington<\/a>\u00a0pulled out of the deal and reimposed sanctions, that strategy collapsed.<\/p>\n

“They had lost the battle. They were not able to reverse course, since the Europeans did not stand up to the American decision,” explains Bernard Hourcade, an Iran specialist at France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).<\/p>\n

Lebanon Rebukes Iran for Calling Hezbollah ‘More Essential Than Bread and Water’<\/h3>\n

The Lebanese Foreign Minister has rebuked a senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader for describing Hezbollah as \u201cmore essential than bread and water\u201d for Lebanon.\u00a0Adviser Ali Akbar Velayati made the comment after Israel assassinated Hezbollah’s chief of staff\u00a0Haitham Ali Tabatabai<\/a>\u00a0in an air strike in Beirut on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOngoing attacks and crimes committed by the Zionist entity against Lebanon show that the presence of Hezbollah has become more important for Lebanon than daily bread,\u201d Mr Velayati told Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
