A New Battle Against Apartheid, This Time in Iran<\/h3>\n

I always admired my father, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Last month, something happened that reminded me of him a lot. Standing before over 1,000 Iranian American activists fighting for freedom in Iran, I felt I was walking, however humbly, into his footsteps. His fight to end apartheid in South Africa shaped my own engagement in the campaign for a free Iran that echoes that same moral calling.<\/p>\n

As a U.S. senator, my father championed many principled causes, but his crusade against South Africa\u2019s apartheid regime remains one of his most defining battles. I watched him confront impossible odds and deep frustration. Yet he never wavered. When apartheid finally ended, I knew we had witnessed history.<\/p>\n

Each generation inherits its own battles. For me, supporting the Iranian people as they fight to establish a democratic republic stands out as one of the defining struggles of our time.<\/p>\n

Minister Anand Announces Additional Sanctions Against Iran<\/h3>\n

The Honorable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada is imposing additional sanctions against 4 individuals under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations<\/em>.<\/p>\n

These individuals, all Iranian senior officials, have been involved in gross and systematic human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran), and have had a significant role in facilitating and directing repressive policies.<\/p>\n

Iran continues to crack down on protests and dissent in violation of international human rights obligations. Security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have used excessive and lethal force to suppress protests, restricting Iranians\u2019 rights to freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly and association, among others. Reports from human rights organizations and United Nations experts have documented extensive violations, beatings, arbitrary arrests and torture, including for those in custody.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s youth carry out fifth wave of fiery operations in response to executions<\/span><\/h3>\n

In response to 252 brutal executions by Iranian regime authorities from November 22 to December 13, 2025, the rebellious youth carried out 15 fiery attacks against the regime\u2019s judiciary centers and IRGC <\/span>Basij<\/span> bases. In this series of oppression-breaking operations on Sunday, December 14, 2025, symbols of suppression and repression were targeted in the cities of Tehran, Kerman, Isfahan, <\/span>Azna<\/span>, Rask, Zahedan, <\/span>Sabzevar<\/span>, <\/span>Nazarabad<\/span> (Alborz province), <\/span>Iranshahr<\/span>, Ahvaz, <\/span>Gorgan<\/span>, and <\/span>Varamin<\/span>. <\/span>The brutal execution of 252 individuals in three weeks is part of a policy of public intimidation and creating an atmosphere of repression to prevent protests and uprisings by people fed up with the livelihood crisis, high prices, and backbreaking inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Humanitarian Crisis in <\/span>Evin<\/span> Prison: Women Political Prisoners Held in Life-Threatening Conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n

At least 60 women political prisoners are being held in alarmingly inhumane conditions in an underground ward of <\/span>Evin<\/span> Prison in Tehran, according to multiple reports and testimonies from inside Iran. The prisoners have been transferred to a damp basement located approximately 40 steps below ground, where conditions are described as catastrophic and pose serious risks to their physical and mental health. The women political prisoners are currently confined in a severely unhygienic, poorly ventilated basement space and are deprived of the most basic standards of sanitation, welfare, and personal hygiene. Prisoners report that both corridors and cells are heavily contaminated. A persistent and dangerous infestation of rats and other vermin has been reported, with estimates indicating the presence of up to 100 rats in the ward.<\/span><\/p>\n
