Ali Safavi, a member of the NCRI Foreign Affairs Committee, said Iran\u2019s political future must be decided inside the country\u2014arguing that outside military action alone will not deliver regime change\u2014during an interview with CNN\u2019s Jim Sciutto.<\/p>\n

Safavi told Sciutto that the reported death of Iran\u2019s supreme leader marked a turning point, saying, \u201cKhamenei\u2019s death marks the end of the religious tyranny ruling Iran for the past\u2026 47 years.\u201d But he emphasized that any transition must be led domestically: \u201cChange in Iran has to come from the ground by the Iranian people and by the organized, structured opposition<\/a> to this regime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warning against the idea that airstrikes can produce political transformation, Safavi said, \u201cIf past is prologue, aerial campaigns will not bring about regime change in Iran.\u201d He pointed instead to opposition organizing, saying the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) had announced plans for a transition authority. \u201cYesterday, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance\u2026 announced the formation of a provisional government<\/a> which, once in Iran, will hold free and fair elections to elect a constituent assembly,\u201d he said, adding that the assembly would draft a future constitution.<\/p>\n
