Bombing Won’t Overthrow Ruling Clerics, Iran Dissidents Say<\/h3>\n

PARIS, March 11 (Reuters) – A senior official from \u200ba Paris-based Iranian opposition group said on Thursday that the U.S.-Israeli\u00a0war on Iran<\/a>\u00a0\u200cwould not topple the clerical leadership, arguing that only a popular uprising backed by internal resistance could do so.<\/p>\n

Almost two weeks of bombing have killed around 2,000 people in Iran including supreme leader Ayatollah \u200bAli Khamenei, and damaged much of its military and security apparatus.<\/p>\n

Iran has responded in \u200bkind, throwing global energy markets and transport into chaos and spreading the \u2060conflict across the Middle East, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has tightened its grip \u200bon power and threatened to crush any unrest.<\/p>\n

“The 12-day war in June, and the current \u200bwar, now in its 12th day, proved that bombings cannot overthrow the regime,” Mohammad Mohaddesin, head of foreign policy at the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), told a news conference.<\/p>\n

U.N. Condemns Iran as Strikes Spread Across Gulf, Shipping Lanes and Iranian Cities<\/h2>\n

The war expanded sharply over the past 24 hours, with the Iranian regime intensifying attacks across the Gulf and the United States and Israel pressing deeper strikes inside Iran, as the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution condemning Tehran<\/a> and oil markets surged on fears of a wider disruption to global supply.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the Security Council passed a resolution calling on Iran to immediately halt attacks on Gulf states. The measure, which passed 13-0 with two abstentions, described the attacks as violations of international law and \u201ca serious threat to international peace and security.\u201d It demanded an end to Iranian attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, condemned attacks on civilian areas and infrastructure, reaffirmed freedom of navigation, and warned against any move to close the Strait of Hormuz or disrupt shipping through Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab.<\/p>\n

Hours later, the fighting widened again.<\/p>\n

Iranian state-controlled outlets said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had launched what it called the 40th wave<\/a> of \u201cOperation True Promise 4,\u201d firing Ghadr, Emad, Kheybar Shekan and Fattah missiles at targets in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and American bases in the region, including Al Azraq and Al Kharj, in coordination with “allied armed groups.” Air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, Bahrain and Kuwait. The Israeli military said it had detected another ballistic missile attack from Iran and warned that sirens were expected in southern Israel before later saying residents in some areas could leave shelters. Israeli emergency officials said no fatalities were reported in that round.<\/p>\n
