For decades, Western capitals have clung to a comforting but catastrophic delusion: that the clerical dictatorship of Iran\u2014the world\u2019s leading state sponsor of terrorism\u2014can be managed, contained, or gradually reformed through engagement, sanctions relief, and diplomatic niceties. This illusion has not merely shaped policy; it has produced a sustained campaign of marginalization, smear, and selective enforcement against the one Iranian opposition force that refuses to play by the regime\u2019s rules: the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK\/PMOI) the main constituent of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Regime\u2019s Industrialized Smear Machine<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Iranian regime\u00a0operates\u00a0a documented, industrialized disinformation apparatus explicitly designed to erase the\u00a0organized Resistance\u00a0from the realm of legitimate alternatives. State media, the film industry, front NGOs,\u00a0and a cyber army numbering<\/a> in the tens of thousands flood global discourse with the same triad of labels: \u201ccult,\u201d \u201cno popular support,\u201d \u201cterrorist relics.\u201d Hundreds of books, dozens of films, and thousands of articles have been manufactured for this purpose. The goal is brutally simple: convince the world there is no\u00a0viable\u00a0alternative to the\u00a0Iranian regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes this machinery effective is the receptive soil it finds in Western journalism and policy circles. Major outlets have repeatedly framed the MEK as \u201ccontroversial,\u201d\u00a0or \u201cquestioned in legitimacy,\u201d\u00a0reframing stories about\u00a0its past while laundering regime-sourced narratives into respectable discourse.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pattern extends deeply into Persian-language media ecosystems\u2014both diaspora-based and Western-funded outlets.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More fundamentally, the regime\u2019s intelligence apparatus has inserted elements into media<\/a>, think tanks, government advisory circles, and human-rights organizations in Western capitals. In the past decade, after the illusion of internal reform collapsed, it launched a project to elevate Reza Pahlavi and remnants of the fallen monarchy. The goal: channel public discontent toward a figure who\u00a0poses\u00a0no\u00a0threat to the regime,<\/span>\u00a0possesses no organized network inside Iran, promises to preserve the regime\u2019s core institutions (including the IRGC, Basij, and intelligence agencies), refuses to break with the crimes of the previous dictatorship, and stakes everything on foreign military intervention and bombing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
