Iran typically executes drug offenders more often than political dissidents. But the figure shows a dramatic shift in execution patterns since joint US-Israeli air strikes on Feb 28 \u2013 despite Donald Trump\u2019s warning that Tehran\u00a0should not execute protesters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe major difference we see after the start of the war, particularly from March 18, is the large number of political prisoners being executed,\u201d said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organisation.<\/p>\n

Since before Iran\u2019s 1979 revolution, Western policy toward that country has been shaped less by realities on the ground than by what foreign policymakers found convenient to believe about them. The myths have changed over the decades. The cost of believing them has not.<\/p>\n

In late 1977, Jimmy Carter famously toasted the Shah\u2019s Iran as \u201can island of stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within fifteen months, the monarchy had collapsed, and the foreign-policy establishment that had built its assumptions around the Shah was left scrambling to comprehend a revolution it had utterly failed to foresee. The lesson should have been unmistakable: never again mistake repression for permanence, or assume that the political order in Iran is immune to upheaval. But the lesson was never truly learned.<\/p>\n

After Ayatollah Khomeini hijacked a broad-based popular revolution and erected a theocratic dictatorship upon its ruins, Washington and many of its allies gradually embraced the same fallacy in a different form. The clerical regime, they concluded, could perhaps be moderated, pressured, negotiated with, or contained\u2014but never fundamentally challenged from within. Diplomacy could be attempted; sanctions could be imposed; tactical pressure could fluctuate. Yet the regime itself came to be treated as an enduring fact of the regional landscape.<\/p>\n

US\/Israeli strikes on Iran and the subsequent blockading of the Strait of Hormuz, have left the world talking about petrol prices instead of the ongoing slaughter of opponents of the Ayatollah\u2019s rule, they added.<\/p>\n

Londoner Rosa Zaraei, who is helping publicise a mass 100,000 strong pro-democracy rally in Paris next month, said: \u201cThis whole war couldn\u2019t have come at a better time for the regime. Covering the years 2020 to 2025, these classified minutes and audio transcripts show that senior officials from the Intelligence Ministry, the IRGC, the police, and provincial authorities have repeatedly treated the Resistance Units not as a marginal issue, but as a persistent and expanding strategic threat.<\/p>\n

This contradiction goes to the heart of Iran\u2019s current political crisis. Since the December 2017 uprising, repeated nationwide revolts have shown the Iranian people\u2019s rejection of both clerical rule and any return to dictatorship under another name.
