In what is being described as one of the most expansive and politically significant international initiatives on Iran in recent years, a coalition of more than 3,000 global dignitaries from 55 countries has issued a joint declaration urging an immediate end to political executions in Iran and endorsing a democratic transition for the nation.<\/p>\n

The signatories\u2014comprising former presidents, prime ministers, cabinet ministers, lawmakers, Nobel Prize laureates<\/a>, diplomats, and human rights advocates\u2014warned that the country has arrived at a “historic crossroads.” The declaration arrives amid reports of an escalating domestic crackdown by the Iranian judiciary.<\/p>\n

A Surge in Capital Punishment and Repression<\/h2>\n

The joint statement sounds an urgent alarm over a sharp rise in political repression within Iran, explicitly highlighting recent executions targeting political dissidents and demonstrators.<\/p>\n

“We are deeply concerned by a new wave of political executions in Iran,” the statement reads. “In recent weeks, a number of prisoners have been executed for their membership in the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) or for participating in last January\u2019s uprising.”<\/p>\n
