The Iranian political establishment is experiencing unprecedented institutional friction following the transition of authority to Mojtaba Khamenei. Rather than presenting a unified front during this sensitive political pivot, core state components\u2014including the Assembly of Experts, the Parliament, and the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC)\u2014are displaying visible policy disagreements. A clear indicator of this friction emerged within the Assembly of Experts. On June 27, 2026, nearly three-quarters of its representatives (63 out of 84<\/a>) bypassed standard protocols to issue an aggressive declaration. The document called the assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “religious duty” to avenge the late Ali Khamenei, while demanding that nuclear negotiations be halted.<\/p>\n

Just hours later on June 28, the Secretariat of the Assembly of Experts publicly reprimanded the signatories via state media, labeling the rogue declaration “unusual and uncustomary.” To reassert centralized control, the Secretariat emphasized its strict adherence to “the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.” Recognizing the immediate threat these internal rifts posed to diplomatic efforts, the regime’s president Masoud Pezeshkian traveled to Qom that same day. While state media sanitized the trip<\/a> as a routine briefing on the post-war economy and a memorial for recently fallen commanders, the political reality was far more urgent. Pezeshkian held targeted consultations with influential clerics, seeking their authoritative religious backing to protect his negotiating team and insulate his administration from the Assembly’s hardline revolt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
