Speaking at an international conference<\/a> at the Italian Parliament on July 16, 2026, Italian Senator Marco Scurria delivered a passionate address calling for international solidarity with the Iranian people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy.<\/p>\n

Senator Scurria expressed deep skepticism regarding international treaties and negotiations with the regime in Teheran, asserting that the mullahs merely buy time while ignoring human rights and mounting international threats. Branding the current regime as the “headquarters of international terrorism”\u2014aligned with autocratic powers to spread global instability\u2014he underscored that true policy must focus directly on supporting the citizens of Iran rather than appeasing their oppressors. He also reaffirmed strong solidarity with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the face of threats from Teheran.<\/p>\n

Drawing a historical parallel to the fall of the Berlin Wall, Senator Scurria reminded the audience that persistent resistance and advocacy from the free world can dismantle seemingly indestructible autocratic regimes. Addressing Iranian dissidents, refugees, and NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, he praised the courage of those who continue to fight despite systemic repression, imprisonment, and the loss of family members.<\/p>\n

Senator Scurria concluded with a message of hope for the Iranian diaspora and those inside the country, emphasizing that no special court or prison can extinguish the fundamental human drive for liberty. He reaffirmed Italy\u2019s enduring commitment\u2014rooted in its own historic struggles for freedom\u2014to stand beside the Iranian people until democracy is fully realized.<\/p>\n

Thank you. Thank you for this room full of people and enthusiasm. Thank you to Vice-President Rampelli for hosting us. Thank you to my colleague and, above all, friend Naike Gruppioni because, step by step, initiative after initiative on Iran, she has taken on a great passion and deep dedication to this theme. And there is a need for that here, too.<\/p>\n

You see, obviously, everyone all over the world is talking these days about the situation in Iran; people are talking about the events concerning the Strait of Hormuz, looking at the resulting crisis for all our economies and our societies. The real problem, in my view, is that little, far too little is said instead about the Iranian people. Because that is what we need to talk about. Because today we have a fundamental and vital urgency to write a free and democratic destiny for Italian\u2014for Iranian citizens.<\/p>\n
