A protest movement that began behind prison walls has entered its 133rd consecutive week, with prisoners in 59 prisons across Iran joining hunger strikes on Tuesday, August 11, to oppose the country\u2019s escalating use of the death penalty.<\/p>\n
The \u201cNo to Execution Tuesdays\u201d campaign has grown into a sustained nationwide initiative connecting prisoners across geographically distant facilities, from Evin and Qezel Hesar near Tehran to prisons in Shiraz, Ahvaz, Zahedan, Urmia, Sanandaj, Tabriz, Kerman, Mashhad and dozens of other cities.<\/p>\n
In its latest statement<\/a>, the campaign said at least 342 prisoners have been executed since March 21, 2026, including 10 women, two people who were minors at the time relevant to their sentences, and 37 political prisoners. These figures are those reported by the campaign amid severe restrictions on independent monitoring and access to information inside Iran.<\/p>\n The campaign also drew attention to the cases of Mojtaba Dehbandi and Kianoush Hamzei, two detainees connected to the January protests in Shiraz who, according to the statement, were sentenced to death during the past week.<\/p>\n Campaign members described the judicial proceedings in their cases as unfair and lacking transparency, placing them within a wider pattern of concern over capital cases involving protesters and political detainees.<\/p>\n Those concerns extend well beyond the prisoners participating in Tuesday\u2019s action. On August 5, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker T\u00fcrk said that at least 56 people had been executed in Iran on national-security-related charges since March 19, including 27 people in cases connected with protests earlier this year. He also warned that more than 100 others faced possible execution on similar charges and expressed concern over failures to guarantee fair-trial and due-process standards.<\/p>\n The UN rights chief said he was alarmed by the increase in executions and death sentences and warned that capital punishment was being used to generate fear and suppress dissent.
