In a coordinated international rebuke, the European Union and an alliance of 32 nations\u2014including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, and Albania\u2014have issued a joint statement<\/a> unequivocally condemning the Iranian regime\u2019s execution of recently detained protesters and its broader application of the death penalty.<\/span><\/p>\n

The international coalition firmly declared that utilizing capital punishment as a tool to silence dissent, intimidate communities, and punish individuals exercising their fundamental human rights is completely unjustifiable.<\/span> The 33 signatories demanded an immediate end to the practice, calling on Iranian authorities to release all arbitrarily detained individuals and to take meaningful steps to respect human rights.<\/span> The joint statement was initially backed by 26 nations, along with the EU’s top diplomat, before additional countries joined, bringing the total number of signatories to 32.<\/span><\/p>\n

This united stance comes against the backdrop of alarming reports from human rights organizations and the United Nations. Since March 2026, the UN has recorded a significant surge in executions in Iran, with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker T\u00fcrk noting<\/a> that the death penalty is being used to instill fear and suppress the population.<\/span> Furthermore, rights groups report an escalation in post-protest repression through fast-tracked group prosecutions. The NGOs have detailed instances where dozens of defendants were tried collectively in Revolutionary Courts, denied independent legal counsel, and handed multiple death sentences following proceedings marked by allegations of torture and forced confessions.<\/span><\/p>\n
