Human beings do not abandon their circumstances merely because they are miserable. Whether trapped in a toxic workplace, a fractured marriage, or a suffocating political system, dissatisfaction alone is rarely enough to provoke a departure<\/a>. To act, a person requires something far more potent than anger: they require the ability to envision a viable alternative. People do not move on the fuel of despair; they move on the fuel of hope.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To understand the survival mechanics of the clerical dictatorship in Iran, one must understand how deeply its architects grasp this psychological truth. Facing a profound crisis of legitimacy in its very first decade, the clerical regime did not invest its primary political capital into improving its own image. Instead, it weaponized its resources to target and extinguish th<\/span>e very concept of an alternative. The regime\u2019s survival strategy has never been about making Iranians love the state; it has been about convincing them that nothing else is possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By the mid-1990s, however, this strategy was fraying. Domestic resentment was swelling, Tehran was suffering deep international isolation, and an organized opposition\u2014the National Council of Resistance of Iran\u2014was steadily gaining diplomatic legitimacy abroad through a high-profile political campaign<\/a> led by<\/span> Mrs.<\/span> Maryam Rajavi between 1995 and 1998.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
