Facing a profound crisis of legitimacy in its very first decade, the clerical regime did not invest its primary political capital into improving its own image. Instead, it weaponized its resources to target and extinguish th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e very concept of an alternative. The regime\u2019s survival strategy has never been about making Iranians love the state; it has been about convincing them that nothing else is possible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By the mid-1990s, however, this strategy was fraying. The dawn of the &#8220;reformist&#8221; era was greeted with rapturous applause in Western capitals, where policymakers were desperate for a moderate mirage to justify engagement. Yet, on May 24, 1997, just hours after Khatami\u2019s election, the leadership of the Iranian Resistance issued a stark, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/five-mortal-blows-to-iran-s-regime-by-the-mek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enduring prognosis<\/a>: &#8220;A viper will not give birth to a dove.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It took two decades, and rivers of blood, for the international community to recognize the accuracy of that assessment. More importantly, it took two decades for the Iranian populace to exhaust the reformist experiment. In the nationwide uprisings that ignited in late 2017 and spilled into 2018, the streets <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WYgzV_lDcjE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delivered their final verdict<\/a> with a chant that reshaped the country\u2019s political landscape: <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cReformist, hardliner, the game is over.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the reformist illusion shattered, the regime faced a renewed threat. A profoundly dissatisfied populace, newly stripped of its false hopes, was searching for a real one. Tehran\u2019s intelligence apparatus understood that the most effective way to neutralize a viable alternative was to manufacture a phantom one.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reza Pahlavi, the son of the deposed Shah, had spent decades as a politically inert figure, largely dismissed by serious Western intelligence agencies and disconnected from the realities of the Iranian street. Suddenly, he was thrust into the spotlight. By amplifying a toothless, easily infiltrated royalist narrative, the regime successfully diverted the energy of the streets and fractured the opposition. It opened its arms to &#8220;defectors,&#8221; allowing opportunists, former regime insiders, and media personalities who had comfortably profited from the mullahs\u2019 economy to suddenly rebrand themselves as royalists.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This revisionist project required a total whitewashing of the Shah\u2019s secret police, the SAVAK. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1978\/12\/12\/archives\/torture-continuing-in-iran-rights-group-charges-whipping-with-wire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A brutal apparatus<\/a> of torture and repression was retroactively rebranded as a professional security force that only targeted &#8220;extremists.&#8221; Because the Shah\u2019s regime largely spared the clerical establishment while ruthlessly executing and torturing intellectuals, leftists, and the MEK, the new royalist PR machine engaged in a bizarre logical inversion: it began framing the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">victims<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the Shah\u2019s tyranny as the villains responsible for the current clerical rule. It was a movement built on historical amnesia, social engineering, and the quiet blessing of the very regime it claimed to oppose.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In an assessment, Col. Sociology dictates that we should ignore a regime&#8217;s propaganda and follow its expenditures. A state\u2019s true vulnerabilities are revealed by where it allocates its intelligence, financial, and military resources.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If we apply this metric to Tehran, the geopolitical ledger is highly revealing. The clerical dictatorship does not dispatch assassins to monarchist rallies, nor does it expend its diplomatic capital to thwart unorganized celebrity activists. Yet, it utilized its official diplomatic pouches to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrt.be\/vrtnws\/en\/2021\/02\/02\/iranian-terror-suspect-is-belgian-jail-is-top-spy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> smuggle TATP explosives<\/a> across Europe in a thwarted attempt to bomb an NCRI gathering in Paris in 2018\u2014a plot that resulted in the historic terrorism conviction of an Iranian diplomat, Assadollah Assadi. When Albania granted asylum and hosted members of the MEK, Tehran unleashed cyberattacks so devastating in 2022 that NATO was forced to intervene, and Tirana severed diplomatic ties with Iran entirely.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The regime\u2019s campaign of psychological warfare is equally vast. It spends millions of dollars annually maintaining complex disinformation networks across platforms like Telegram, Instagram, X, and Facebook. But this operation extends far beyond automated bot farms. Tehran systematically leverages an echo chamber of &#8220;well-established analysts&#8221; and so-called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/09\/25\/2023\/inside-irans-influence-operation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Iran experts<\/a> who permeate Western media networks and think tanks.
