Iran\u2019s ruling establishment is confronting an increasingly combustible mix of security, political and economic pressure. A major armed confrontation erupted in Saravan in southeastern Iran, while factional warfare in Tehran has escalated to open discussion of removing the regime\u2019s president, Masoud Pezeshkian. At the same time, the free-market dollar has again crossed 238,000 tomans<\/a>, keeping economic pressure at the center of officials\u2019 calculations.<\/p>\n

The developments are distinct, but their convergence is significant. Security forces are engaged in armed operations on the periphery, rival factions are fighting openly over control of the government, and senior regime figures are themselves warning that political and economic tensions could produce an \u201cexplosion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hours of Fighting in Saravan<\/h2>\n

Heavy fighting broke out<\/a> in the Bakhshan area of Saravan, Sistan and Baluchistan, beginning around 4 a.m. local time. State media subsequently confirmed an operation by security forces against what provincial officials described as a gathering of an armed anti-regime group.<\/p>\n
