Iran\u2019s accumulating economic pressures<\/a> moved visibly into the streets on September 20, 2026, as retirees demonstrated in several cities while the rial again weakened sharply. At the same time, Parliament advanced legislation expanding state oversight of foreign contacts and requiring schools and universities to teach state-defined material on \u201cenemy infiltration.\u201d In another sign of pressure at the top, Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf publicly confirmed that Tehran is transmitting conditions for renewed negotiations through intermediaries.<\/p>\n

Economic Pain Reaches the Street<\/h2>\n

On September 20, retired steelworkers marched<\/a> through Isfahan toward the provincial governor\u2019s office, while Social Security retirees gathered in Tehran and Shush over pensions, medical costs and inflation. Video reports showed demonstrators chanting, \u201cA retiree\u2019s salary is only enough for one week,\u201d \u201cEnough promises, our table is empty,\u201d and \u201cOnly in the street can we get our rights.\u201d The demonstrations were documented in video reports published Sunday and by Iranian retiree networks.<\/p>\n

The protests came as the currency resumed its decline. Iran\u2019s domestic currency tracker TGJU recorded the dollar at roughly 232,100 tomans on September 20, up 20.4 percent in one month and more than 119 percent over the previous year. TGJU\u2019s September 20 dollar report<\/a> Other domestic market reports placed the free-market rate at around 232,000 tomans, while the official commercial-market rate was about 166,600 tomans.<\/p>\n
