Iranian Political Prisoner Ali Younesi Handed Five More Years as Previous Sentence Nears End<\/h3>\n

Iranian political prisoner and Sharif University student Ali Younesi has had an additional five-year prison sentence upheld on appeal, extending his incarceration just months before his previous enforceable sentence was due to end.<\/p>\n

The ruling comes as Iran\u2019s new academic year begins and means Younesi will remain behind bars rather than return to university. Younesi and fellow imprisoned Sharif University student Amirhossein Moradi had been expected to complete their enforceable sentences in December 2026, after more than six years in prison without a day of furlough.<\/p>\n

The new case was brought against the two students in 2025. Both received an additional 15 months for the charge of \u201cpropaganda activities against the system.\u201d Younesi was separately sentenced to another five years over the charge of \u201cendorsing and strengthening Israel.\u201d At the time, the ruling also included transfer to Kerman Prison and restrictions on telephone communications and access to cyberspace. The currency decline comes alongside official figures showing that Iran\u2019s economy is contracting at an alarming rate. According to the regime\u2019s Statistics Center, the economy shrank by 10.1 percent in the spring of 1405 (2026) compared with the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n

The contraction was not confined to the oil sector. The economy excluding oil contracted by 4.6 percent, while industries and mines declined by 14.7 percent and services by 4.8 percent. The oil sector suffered the sharpest contraction, with negative growth of 26.4 percent.<\/p>\n

At the household level, the consequences are already visible. Final household consumption fell by 4 percent during the same period, indicating that families are cutting back on goods and services that were once ordinary components of everyday life.<\/p>\n

Data released by the Iranian regime\u2019s Ministry of Health shows that the oral health crisis extends from childhood into old age, while the gap between the \u201cneed for treatment\u201d and the \u201cability to access it\u201d grows deeper by the day.<\/p>\n

Among children aged five to six, 84.3% need dental services; that means more than eight out of every 10 preschool children. Of these needs, 69% are related to fillings and treatment of tooth decay, while 12.3% are related to tooth extraction. The need for tooth extraction at age five is a clear sign of the failure of education, prevention, and early intervention\u2014a failure whose cost falls directly on families.<\/p>\n

This cycle does not stop during adolescence. About 75% to 76% of 12- and 15-year-olds continue to have dental problems. Timely treatment could have prevented many of these problems, but the high cost of dental care and inadequate insurance coverage delay visits until severe pain develops. Among people aged 35 to 44, the rate of need reaches 86.1%\u2014the accumulated result of the same cavities that have gone untreated for years.<\/p>\n

Iran Says Kharg Oil Exports Rose 10% Despite Attacks on Its Main Export Terminal<\/h3>\n
