For an ordinary obsolete prison, the language might have been unremarkable. Gohardasht, however, was one of the principal killing grounds of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners\u2014and one of the few surviving physical crime scenes whose architecture later entered an international criminal case.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The judiciary presented the demolition as urban renewal. During an officially organized media tour on October 4, 35 reporters and photographers from roughly 20 domestic outlets were taken to the site as authorities declared the operation complete. The 60-hectare complex is to be redeveloped for residential, commercial, recreational and educational purposes; prison officials said roughly 50 hectares had been \u201cfreed\u201d for investors, while about 17 hectares controlled by the Prisons Organization were expected to be auctioned.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But the question is not whether Karaj needs redevelopment. Survivors reconstructed the \u201cDeath Corridor,\u201d the rooms where prisoners waited to be questioned, and the hall where groups were hanged. Testimony described prisoners being selected, moved through specific corridors and escorted toward execution; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coffeeordie.com\/article\/mek-iranian-opposition-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">models and detailed descriptions<\/a> of Gohardasht were presented during proceedings connected to Noury\u2019s trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> News in Brief<br \/>According to reports from inside Iran, the clerical regime has been secretly moving thousands of prisoners from Gohardasht Prison to Qezel-Hesar Prison. The National Council of Resistance of Iran had been warning about the destruction of evidence for years. In <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2017<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it reported damage to graves associated with 1980s executions in Tabriz, Mashhad and Ahvaz. In <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">April 2021<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it warned that authorities were threatening the Khavaran mass graves; weeks later, 1,112 relatives of victims appealed to the UN and Western governments. In <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2023<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, when Gohardasht was emptied and its inmates moved to Ghezel Hesar, NCRI warned that closing the prison could become a prelude to eliminating a major crime scene. In <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">August 2025<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it condemned the leveling of Plot 41 at Tehran\u2019s Behesht-e Zahra cemetery. Its report specifically cited the destruction of the prison\u2019s physical layout\u2014including areas remembered as the \u201cDeath Corridor\u201d and \u201cDeath Hall\u201d\u2014and called for the site to be preserved for future accountability proceedings. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/en.iranhrs.org\/statistics-of-the-massacre-of-political-prisoners-in-1988-chapter-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Society<\/a> has likewise spent years documenting the 1988 massacre, including the scale of killings at Gohardasht and the prison\u2019s place within the nationwide execution system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These warnings were not occurring in isolation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/8259\/2018\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amnesty International<\/a> and Justice for Iran documented as early as <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2018<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a systematic campaign to bulldoze, build over or otherwise damage suspected mass graves from the 1988 massacre, warning that vital forensic evidence was being deliberately eradicated. A recent investigation based on information from inside the prison described extreme overcrowding, inadequate food and medical care, collective violence and chronic psychological terror. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/iran-hrm.com\/2026\/04\/11\/hold-the-perpetrators-of-political-executions-in-iran-accountable-international-debt-to-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HRM has documented<\/a> Ghezel Hesar as a central site for political executions and prisoner resistance. In 2026, it reported the executions there of political prisoners accused of PMOI affiliation, violent raids on political wards, and a hunger strike by roughly 1,500 death-row prisoners protesting executions.
