Senior officials are increasingly describing Iran\u2019s economic deterioration as a security vulnerability. Judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei warned on October 5, 2026, against \u201canything that could\u2026 anger the people,\u201d coupling that warning with demands for \u201ccohesion\u201d and vigilance against an enemy exploiting internal divisions. State television carried the remarks, while the regime-aligned Arman-e Melli<\/em> headlined<\/a> them \u201cLet\u2019s Not Anger the People.\u201d The point was not a promise of economic relief; Ejei was literally warning against a nationwide unrest.<\/p>\n

That anxiety is reinforced by unusually blunt economic admissions. Ali Babaei Karnami, chairman of parliament\u2019s Social Committee, told ILNA<\/a> on October 5 that inflation in \u201csome goods\u201d had reached 150\u2013160% and claimed workers and retirees were showing \u201crestraint\u201d despite dissatisfaction. \u201cIf the conditions and course of the country were normal,\u201d he added, \u201cthere is no doubt other things would happen.\u201d The free-market dollar, meanwhile, has traded around 270,000 tomans after another steep slide in the rial, according to regime-aligned Nournews. MP Ehsan Azimi-Rad blamed currency and basic-goods price surges partly on \u201cincorrect management\u201d and demanded resignations if top economic officials could not manage \u201cwartime conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

State security forces are using the same vocabulary for the economy. SSF chief Ahmad-Reza Radan called<\/a> merchants \u201clauncher operators of the economic war\u201d and economic \u201cofficers,\u201d while urging joint police-market action against hoarding. In the state-television version, he told the bazaar, \u201cThe time is a time of war,\u201d and warned merchants not to \u201cplay the enemy\u2019s game.\u201d State television\u2019s account also quoted Radan describing hoarders and smugglers as threats to \u201ceconomic security.\u201d Commercial behavior and bazaar stability are thus being folded explicitly into the regime\u2019s security framework.<\/p>\n
