Iran\u2019s ruling establishment is increasingly treating economic deterioration and social dissent as parts of the same security problem. On October 7, 2026, parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf told the SSF command that, after failing in war, the \u201cenemy\u201d was now seeking \u201cinsecurity inside the country.\u201d IRNA reported<\/a> that he paired the warning with a pledge that the three branches of government would make \u201cserious and immediate\u201d efforts to meet the police force\u2019s infrastructural, economic and livelihood needs. The combination is revealing: economic resilience and coercive capacity are being discussed together at the top of the system.<\/p>\n

The rhetoric extends beyond foreign threats. Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh-Hashemi, a former vice president under Ebrahim Raisi, described the January<\/a> 2026 uprising as an attempted \u201cinternal coup\u201d in which domestic actors supposedly sought to \u201clock the economy and people\u2019s livelihoods\u201d and prevent oil-sale revenues from returning to Iran.<\/p>\n

That follows SSF Chief Ahmad-Reza Radan\u2019s warning earlier this week that the bazaar itself is a front in an \u201ceconomic war,\u201d with merchants cast as economic \u201cofficers.\u201d \u201cThe time is a time of war,\u201d he told merchants, urging them to work with police against hoarding and warning them not to \u201cplay the enemy\u2019s game.\u201d Together, the statements show the regime increasingly securitizing inflation, shortages and market instability as potential triggers or instruments of renewed unrest.<\/p>\n
