Tehran says reserves are sufficient, yet the Central Bank is selling large quantities of dollars to restrain demand while the government prepares broad energy cuts to protect production. At the same time, ISNA reported that workers are still waiting for a decision on a mid-year wage adjustment, with the labor minister providing no timetable.

A particularly stark measure of the household squeeze has emerged from the health sector. In a widely circulated clip, Rouhollah Miri, head of the Cancer Institute at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Hospital, described patients who had exhausted their assets and were pleading: “Kill us; we have no money.” He said he had personally seen patients attempting to throw themselves in front of cars outside the hospital. The testimony turns the abstract discussion of “resilience” into a measure of what prolonged inflation and medical costs can mean at household level.

The political significance is that the regime is no longer treating economic dysfunction as a separate policy failure; it is treating it as a threat to internal control. Currency instability, energy shortages, border pressure and armed attacks are increasingly being folded into the same security doctrine. That convergence points to a leadership that sees the danger less in any single crisis than in their potential to reinforce one another—economic hardship feeding anger, anger widening dissent, and dissent stretching an already heavily deployed security apparatus. The regime’s own language therefore suggests that its central challenge is no longer simply withstanding external pressure, but preventing accumulated domestic pressures from converging into a broader crisis of authority.

Three-minute read Iran’s southeastern security picture deteriorated further on October 8, 2026, with two separate armed attacks on state forces in Sistan and Baluchestan.
